Re: Miscellaneous news items that don't warrant their own thread

I don't get this idea that we can't type certain words anymore. It started with the n-word (can't say it, can't even spell it, unless you are African American) but now here's an article where it doesn't spell two words the entire article and I had to go look up in other publications what words were ...

Re: Joe Mauer Hall of Famer?

For catching, I don't like JAWs as much, because so many "catchers" wind up getting so many starts at other positions, so their best seven years are often those years when they are doing little catching. Again, that is what makes Munson's 46.1 WAR in 10 seasons so remarkable. He got all o...

Re: Joe Mauer Hall of Famer?

I agree, those two aren't close to being HOF'ers, especially Molina. Good ball players and nice careers, but HOF should be pretty exclusive. Those guys ain't it. But the "Best Fans in Baseball" claim Molina is the GOAT You just can't give yourself nicknames. People just laugh at that. It'...

I don't think either will sniff the HOF.

Re: Joe Mauer Hall of Famer?

Yes, he had a great career as a catcher, no one is arguing that. The argument has always been that Mauer only played predominately catcher for something like 6 years of his career. The rest was played at 1B and DH. He doesn't have HOF stats at those positions, which were at least half of his career...

Re: Joe Mauer Hall of Famer?

Just rehashing this thread a year later doesn't get around the fact that Mauer wasn't really a catcher. Stop comparing his numbers to guys who were really much more full time catchers. Those stats are only for games as a catcher. Yes, he had a great career as a catcher, no one is arguing that. The ...

Re: Joe Mauer Hall of Famer?

Mauer's #7 was retired last night. Still a debate or HOF status. Here are a few numbers comparing Joe to all catchers. Demonstrates Mauer was not a power hitter, but a hitter for average. Batting Average (min. 500 games caught) Joe Mauer -- .328 Piazza -- .313 Brian Harper -- .306 Manny Sanguillen ...

Re: 2019 NBA Trades and Draft

I'm not so negative on the Lakers. Getting Davis now means you'll have him for after LeBron is gone. They still have room to bring in another max guy so that's why they are looking at bringing in someone like Kemba Walker. Of the guys they gave up, really only Ingram is a guy you can't easily replac...

Re: Voters, Your Foreign Policy Views Stink

Well, one could argue that "an increasing interdependence on the major world economies" is intertwined with internationalism, at least to a point. Good point about the nuclear weapons - without them, we likely would've had an out and out war, or multiple wars, with the USSR. But you gloss ...

Re: 2018-19 NBA Basketball Thread

Tough for the Warriors - two of their best players not only lost to injury during the season, but injuries so severe (Achilles for Durant and ACL for Thompson) that those two guys are likely out for a good chunk of next season as well. Certainly puts the whole free agency period into a different lig...

Well, you did say this... You throw out hyperbole then don't be surprised to get hyperbole back. My bad. I meant closer for many. We aren’t all going to suffer catastrophic financial problems simultaneously. Well, let's hope not, I'm sure that would suck. Crossing my fingers, just in case. 8-)

Yes, compassion and gratitude are decent things, but they have nothing to do with one's life choices. America isn't "on the edge". We're not all teetering on collapse. You're buying into hype from a certain political party. I never said "America is on the edge" or that we're &qu...

Sure it can, and like I said, she owns it. I won’t go into further details but modern life is far more complicated than you’re letting on and even those with immense success are much closer to the edge than simply blowing it off as poor life decisions. That’s a judgemental cop out and there but for...

We don't have, and never have, had the goal of income equality. Is that something we really want anyway? Income inequality will always increase when the economy increases. If everybody's 5% richer than before, simple math tells you that 5% for the lower income guy is less than 5% for the upper incom...
