Colorado and Utah aren't nearly as close to the coast as the area in question, so there isn't as much residual moisture. FWIW, the ski resorts east of SLC (Alta, Snowbird) average more snow than any other in America. A lot of this is lake effect snow from the Great Salt Lake, but you get the idea.CAA Flagship wrote:kalm wrote:

But, seriously, I asked what's going on to the north of Spokraine. You said "mountains". I asked why Colorado and Utah do not have the same climate? You said "mountains". Geesh.
I'll assume it has something to do with the climate differences to the west of those locations.

Thanks. So what's going on to the south of Spokane? Are the mountains in central Idaho different (elevation, trees, etc.) than the north or is it the Seattle effect that causes the difference in sunlight?Grizalltheway wrote:Colorado and Utah aren't nearly as close to the coast as the area in question, so there isn't as much residual moisture. Ours consisted of LVTs, HMMWVs, and deuce and a halfs rather than Peterbuilts and Kenworths.Cluck U wrote:Convoy?93henfan wrote:I used to have to convoy from Yuma AZ to San Diego on occasion. Moisture comes in off the Pacific. Much of it is captured by the Cascades and BC Coastal Ranges to the north and the Sierras to the south. Behind those ranges sit the Great Basin and Columbia Plateau Deserts which are lowlands.CAA Flagship wrote:I see mountains as far south as Boise.Grizalltheway wrote:

And that map you provided makes it look like they are ginormouser.
Northern Washington, including the Okanogan Highlands in the middle of the state is fairly mountainous straight across hence the higher cloud cover versus the lowland desert and rain shadow areas to the south.
South of Spokane is a mixture of mountains (Blues, Wallowas, and Eagle Cap Wilderness of WA, OR, and ID) and desert lowlands. Boise is semi-arid and sits in a large basin between the Snake River and the mountains.
As Pacific moisture begins to rise back once it hits the Rockies, you see more clouds and precipitation. However Utah and Colorado are further south with higher temperatures and less humidity. They are also further away from the Pacific and have the massive Sierras and interior ranges of Nevada between them and the ocean sapping more moisture. But there too, you see an increase in precipitation over the lower deserts and along with that, more trees.
It's just not as much as the more temperate climate and closer proximity to the Pacific of North Central and Northeast Washington State.
Hope this helps.

So it seems that several factors come in to play that produces that darker blue area north of Spokane (GATW's first map) versus the mountains in the central Idaho area. That being the Seattle effect and the area between the mountains and the Pacific (more mountains in the north vs. the Palouse further south).

What is the Palouse again? It's that in Southern France?

Pay attention. We've covered this numerous times.93henfan wrote:What is the Palouse again? It's that in Southern France?
It is a wasteland in southern Spokraine. The Russians are trying to take over the land from the Canadians, and they want to kick the drunk Indians out. Spokrainians get no sympathy from the over-paid baristas to the west or the Montanadians to the east. Oh, and there seems to be a lot of infighting there over water.

The Palouse is similar with comparable food and wine but without the faggy accents.
