Cultures can adapt... (Because Baboons)

Post by Chizzang »

A study shows that Baboon Cultures can adapt from Violent aggressive and highly punitive in nature to more peaceful, adaptive and loving...

Example:
A Baboon Troop in the 1980's was hit by tuberculosis and it killed off all of the ALPHA aggressive violent males
The remaining Males re-arranged the troop in a completely different style
more loving and adaptive

The new less aggressive style has stayed with the troop for over two decades now

Here's the Good News / Bad News Conclusion:
"Dr. de Waal, who wrote an essay to accompany the new baboon study, said ''The good news for humans is that it looks like peaceful conditions, once established, can be maintained,'' he said.

''And if baboons can do it,'' he said, ''why not us?
The bad news is that you might have to first knock out all the most aggressive males to get there.''

Is that a cultural change or just some change in the genetic makeup of the troop, Chizz? Or is there a difference? And what are you suggesting with your comment about Islam? :?

The thing about more advanced societies is that there's usually a plummet in birth rates that goes with it. Take Japan (maybe one of the most peaceful societies and at the bottom of the pack in terms of violent crime rates) and look at the rise of so-called herbivore men there and look at the staggering stats on virginity there. The Japanese don't have an epidemic of asexuality (porn is a thriving business there), it's just that women want brash and dashing badass alpha men to at least some degree and a lot of the men don't see it as worthwhile to try and become that person that women want.

"OMG sexism why are you blaming women!" Well, it's not men that write lots of love letters to psychotic killers of the opposite sex (see James Holmes, couldn't get any attention from women until he killed a bunch of people in a theater). That is an extreme form female heterosexuality, but that's the direction it goes in.

If we artificially lowered all men's testosterone like some radical feminists wanted we would have a more peaceful society, but we'd also put ourselves on a one-way trip to oblivion.

Sorry, I went off on another weird, irrelevant rant, or did I?

Are you conveniently leaving out how you get rid of the alpha males, or did you just skip over the parts you couldn't figger?

I find the "Hey man, let's talk this thing out. We're all cool." thing works, until heads come off.

"Alphas" existed everywhere. Even here. I'm one who will try to walk away from a fight, but if it gets pushed, they're getting the horns.

I don't know if it's quite as peaceful as initially described. Looks to me like the male-dominance struggles still occur. It's just that the males don't pick on the females or male mismatches. It's still a dominance heirarchy thing:
What most distinguishes this congregation from others is that the males resist taking out their bad moods on females and underlings. When a dominant male wants to pick a fight, he finds someone his own size and rank. As a result, a greater percentage of male-male conflicts in the Forest Troop occur between closely ranked individuals than is seen in the control populations, where the bullies seek easier pickings. Moreover, Forest Troop males of all ranks spend more time grooming and being groomed, and just generally huddling close to troop mates, than do their counterpart males in the study.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Right..!!!
Part of an advanced civilized culture is the "do unto others" and "pick on someone your own size"
