Cheney Supports Gay Marriage

Post by Ibanez »

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090602/D98IHB300.html
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

"I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish."
I agree with him, it should be left up to the state. Good for you Dick,

Good Decisions: 1
Bad Decisions:1, 234, 6587,326,985,734,198,571,219,684,165,485,416,541,634
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

Spot on!

He sure wasn't saying that in 2004, maybe the "states should decide", but not the "I support it".

Actually, he did, at least twice in 2004. Once during the VP debate with Edwards, then again here:

Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian, drew criticism from both proponents and foes of gay marriage Tuesday after he distanced himself from President Bush’s call for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

At a campaign rally in this Mississippi River town, Cheney spoke supportively about gay relationships, saying “freedom means freedom for everyone,” when asked about his stand on gay marriage.

“Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it’s an issue our family is very familiar with,” Cheney told an audience that included his daughter. “With the respect to the question of relationships, my general view is freedom means freedom for everyone. ... People ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to.

“The question that comes up with the issue of marriage is what kind of official sanction or approval is going to be granted by government? Historically, that’s been a relationship that has been handled by the states. The states have made that fundamental decision of what constitutes a marriage,” he said.

Does this mean Cheney has already left the Republican party?

To add my meaningless 2 cents...
I find it actually fairly exciting that people (in general) can be so complex... you never know what resonates in the soul of a man - I have no love for a draft dodger who grows up to be a war monger... but this does add to his "One interesting dude" category significantly...

Guy is a terrorist and killer, plain and simple. The only category he's in is with Stalin, Hitler and Mao.

Sounds like a statement made by a father who loves his daughter. :)

No, it's because Lynne bitch slapped the shit out of him, and had he held a higher office than Vice President (of his own household) he would not have come out publicly with these statements regardless of how much crackage Mary has licked out.

How do you know that, hillhound? Do you extrapolate that conclusion from Bush's support for a Constitutional amendment? Provide a source, please.

so he realizes that gays are human too then.

Maybe everyone should try to have a good friend/relative that is gay - much harder to say "FUCK YOU SINNER" when that person is not some nameless face in the crowd.
