Arizona officers fight concealed gun proposal

Post by dbackjon »

Law-enforcement officials are working to quash a proposal that would allow gun owners in Arizona to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

The proposal, which is scheduled to be heard today in the Senate Judiciary Committee, has sparked a debate over what restrictions should be placed on gun owners who wish to carry weapons in public buildings, schools and other places.

Opponents said the bill would endanger law-enforcement officers and the public by eliminating permits and the training courses now required to obtain them

I found that during my years as a cop, law enforcement types were generally split on concealed carry. Usually, the split ran along political lines and tended to be predictable. The big government types were against concealed carry and the civil liberties types were supportive. In fact, there never seemed to be much difference between cops and the general public where concealed carry was concerned, except that the profession tends to attract more of the civil liberties types.

All that being said, I think that not requiring a permit is a little foolish, even though it is in line with my own libertarian leanings. I personally don't see a problem with requiring someone to have a little safety training so they don't accidentally shoot somebody's pecker off, particularly mine. Plus, most gun safety courses that are taught pursuant to granting a permit include how to deal with law enforcement officers sos that you don't git yerself kilt. That is probably the main objection from law enforcement on this issue. Too many people out there who don't have enough sense not to whip it out of their britches when an officer asks if they're armed or not.

I have a carry permit and it was easy to get...too easy IMO. There should have at east been a test before it was issued. There should be a test before you vote too. Why is driving the only activity we test a basic understanding of?

Agree....Like Cid90, much as my liberterian leanings want to allow the law-abiding citizen to carry a gun concealed if he chooses, the pragmatic part of me says minimal safety course is not really a burden. So, if the person passes a safety test, let 'em carry.....

Also, like BTK, I believe you should be required to pass some kind of test to vote, but realize this smacks of the "literacy" tests required to vote in post-Civil War south......however, requiring a valid picture ID should be minimum to vote...

The government sells serious weapons all over the planet, many of them paid for with heroin money, some of which get used against US troops, and they're worried about me carrying a pistol?
