"DirecTV Allows Some NFL Refunds After Anthem Controversy
Satellite broadcaster will let at least some customers get refunds for its Sunday Ticket package of NFL games if they cite players’ national anthem protests.

DirecTV is letting at least some customers cancel subscriptions to its Sunday Ticket package of NFL games and obtain refunds if they cite players’ national anthem protests as the reason, customer service representatives said Tuesday.

Sunday Ticket’s regular policy doesn’t allow refunds once the season is under way. But the representatives said they are making exceptions this season—which began in September—in response to the protests, in which players kneel or link arms during the national anthem.

Spokesmen for DirecTV-parent AT&T Inc. and the National Football League declined to comment............"

Last night’s ESPN Monday Night Football game – a Dallas Cowboys’ 28-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals earned a 9.3 overnight rating according to Nielsen, based on the metered markets. This is an increase of 63 percent compared to Falcons-Saints in 2016. The game rating peaked from 9:15-9:45 p.m. ET with a 10.3 metered market rating.

So instead of summarizing and saying "concerns," I have to list the concerns every single time?

Certainly from these protests is born a separate 1st amendment issue, but that doesn't mean the story regarding police brutality of the black community has disappeared. It's just two separate questions now.

Indeed. This is like the election all over again. Trump just sucks the air out of the room and then all anyone can do is react to him. Trumpkins all around the country are sucking this up, and come 2020, there may be more than enough of them again to vote him in a second term.

Question 1 (and I apologize if this has already been asked and answered) - why is kneeling during national anthem disrespectful but proudly displaying the flag from an unsuccessful rebellion against the nation that the anthem and flag represent not disrespectful?

Question 2 - why do we let Trump and other charlatans lead us around by our nose rather than addressing real issues?

I agree completely. Also the Tea Party patriots flying the flag upside down to protest Obama.

Well... he's the President. What he says (or tweets) is news. It does sound like your drunk uncle posting on facebook, but it carries more weight since it's the President. I wish we could just ignore him and not have to invite him for Thanksgiving, but it ain't happenin.

My favorite quote from Thomas Jefferson is, "Beware of cowards who shelter behind the flag of patriotism" back in the 1700's they knew that people would use the vale of patriotism for their own personal agenda. Everyone wants to be a super patriot when the argument agrees with them. I will continue to support these men until we demand that the USA lives up to her original promise. That all men are created equal.

Nielsen: Football ratings off 11 percent this year
NEW YORK (AP) — Through three weeks, viewership for national telecasts of NFL games is down 11 percent this season compared to 2016, the Nielsen company said on Tuesday.

Nielsen said the games averaged 17.63 million viewers for the first three weeks of last season, and have dipped to 15.65 million this year. The Nielsen figures don’t include many of the Sunday afternoon games that are shown to a regional audience, but not a national one.

The NFL ratings are in focus because of President Donald Trump’s suggestion that viewers are turned off by a protest against police brutality that began with quarterback Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the national anthem. The protests spread rapidly this past weekend following the president’s criticism of people involved.

To be fair, all the majors and NCAA are facing a decline in viewership. The biggest concern for leagues is cord cutting, especially among millennials who watch less sports than any previous generation.

The CTE and protest issues won't matter if the NFL can't win over new fans while older viewers die off.

I don't think it's hyberbole. There are a lot of people who are really into the flag ritualism. You can see that manifested in historical polls about whether or not there should be a Constitutional Amendment to allow Congress to pass a law making flag burning a crime. It's not always a majority in those polls. But it's always a substantial proportion of the population (see https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the ... 77e080f657).

It is just a piece of cloth. There is something off when people act like a piece of cloth has to be treated with "respect." Yes, I am proud of the symbol and I fly it pretty frequently in front of my house. But this thing where people are into all this ritualistic stuff about how it can't touch the ground, can't get rained on, has to be folded a certain way, etc., is sick. It really is like some Medieval religious ritualism.
That's OK for you to think that way but all that tells me is you don't get the reason why.

I don't think a majority of the people speaking out against the kneeling are the same one's supporting the flag from an unsuccessful rebellion against the nation. There are many, IMO, not a majority.

I think it's news media driven.

I personally have no problem with Kaepernick kneeling and his issues with the United States government. African American's are not treated as equals by the police or court system.

I'm a freedom person, freedom of expression. I also have no problem with people speaking their mind on the anthem, and flag respect issues. I don't think people are racist when they oppose Kaepernick's kneeling for the anthem. Many have been caught up in the flag/anthem discussion and the treatment of African American's by the police and courts is being overlooked.

Fake news alert on this one - three of those games didn't even happen this year - the Giants haven't played the Redskins yet, the Bengals weren't at San Fran, and the Titans didn't play the Chargers this year. I didn't check pre-season games but that's a whole different can of worms if you showed pictures from there.

With that said, though, there's no doubt the NFL is experiencing a dip in interest, and certainly some of it can be attributed to backlash against the protests. Certainly not all, though, as all sports have seen some issues of late.
