I'm fairly sure that if our roads were 50% self driving cars and 50% human driven - human drivers would kill the lion's share of people

Firstly, Since this is a free country - you can put the car in the "Ultimate Danger" Setting
which is doing nothing and just driving it while texting

As an expression of our American freedom..!!!!

Secondly, since you can remove the autopilot entirely
There are also about 8 parameter settings
Tesla encourages you to leave the FUCKING autopilot alone as it is set to "best practices"

or a bottle of pills that has a warning

Only an idiot would NOT monitor the vehicle. You still have to be alert. You can't set the car to auto pilot then take a nap.
