Also, the match is a mismatch. The Chinese are WAY smarter than Trump. He is an idiot. He's no match for them.

Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I've been telling you Trump went around to the ASEAN nation's well before this getting countries ready for business with the US. Outside of those countries, Trump seems to be working with India as well.JohnStOnge wrote:Yeah. Right. We'll see. Trump is an idiot. At some point you will realize that.SeattleGriz wrote:

While it ALL may not come together, I have confidence it will be enough to change trade with China in a manner more favorable to the US.

The US rep to the ASEAN conference just a few weeks ago in Bangkok was a deputy asst secretary at NSC. Not exactly your A team. Thai media was calling it a slight.SeattleGriz wrote:I've been telling you Trump went around to the ASEAN nation's well before this getting countries ready for business with the US. The Commerce Secretary was at the IPBC but that was it. We do not appear to be terribly engaged with the ASEAN states other than to start the Blue Dot initiative as a counter to the Road and Belt project. It might be because there are advisors to the Prez who are saying the SE Asian states are doomed to vassal status no matter what we do (and there is an argument for that)... but we do not appear to be making an all fronts effort on China. It is mainly unilateral in nature

And that's the thing, Trump may be and could still be very useful on the China front simply from the fact that he's raised awareness that the status quo and business as usual that was the case under previous administrations (GOP and Dems) was a long term losing strategy. China needed to and continues to need to be confronted and at a minimum proprietary information needs to be tightened. Without Trump that likely doesn't happen. The Trans-Pacific free trade thing was a thing in the right direction, but wasn't anywhere near as confrontational as it needed to be. Confrontations make more things visible - Hong Kong, the Ughuirs (sp), the fanatical nationalism, etc. CID's been right on this for awhile, China is a massive threat in every way, and needs to be the focus. I don't think Trump is the right person long term to develop a strategy and implement it (he's not what one would call a "thinker") but at least he's changed the temperament and the conversation.CID1990 wrote:The US rep to the ASEAN conference just a few weeks ago in Bangkok was a deputy asst secretary at NSC. I agree that after his tenure is over, his greatest contribution on China will likely be just having shined a light on them. He’s too myopic to make an all fronts effort though.GannonFan wrote:And that's the thing, Trump may be and could still be very useful on the China front simply from the fact that he's raised awareness that the status quo and business as usual that was the case under previous administrations (GOP and Dems) was a long term losing strategy.
