The Raptor has been a stupid Zoomie wet dream buzzard in the inner ring of the Pentagon for 20 years now. If we have a real strategic threat in the next 20 years we'll wind up spinning up the F-18s and F-16s anyway because they require less time and care to manufacture, and are still better than anything the Chinese and Russians are putting out. Think of it like this: the PRC's premier fighter is considered to be the performance equivalent of the F-16. In other words, the best the PRC can do in 2009 is to match our 1974 technology. The new Flanker and the new MiG (which is just a newer Fulcrum) are real purty at air shows, but they die at a standoff to the Hornet and the Eagle, due to the fact that we have much better airborne EW command and control structures.

The JSF is nearly as capable as the F-22 at a significantly lower cost. Dropping the F-22 don't mean nothin'.
