America isn't and has never been perfect. It's always been a work in progress and there have been steps forward and backward from the beginning. Unfortunately, we're currently in the midst of a step backward.
Liberties that are being stamped - due process, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly to name a few.
How serious is the problem - George Floyd's death was tragic as is the suspicion and fear of death that African Americans live under but assault by another civilian is a significantly greater cause of death for African Americans. If we really want to save lives we should work on improving poverty and reducing gang violence. What is going on now fans the flames of disrespect and distrust. We're going to have a hard time fixing the problems that way. We could really use an MLK Jr type figure to provide the voice of hope and reason.
That suspicion and fear of death that African Americans live under is bad but it is also better than it was in the 50's/60's and prior. We need to remember that we have made progress and have hope that we can continue to make progress despite setbacks.
