We’ve seen bridges have 1 support collapse, and 1 or 2 sections on either side of it collapse- that’s what I would have expected. But you take out 1 support column and almost the entire 1.6 mile bridge collapses? Da fuq?

I'm not a structural engineer but I would imagine that when the ship hit the pier/support column and pushed it forward that it stressed the whole bridge and that it came apart and collapsed.

I'm not a structural engineer (I did build the toothpick bridge in my HS Physics class that took the most weight to break which has to be right up there with winning a Jr High Science Fair ) but I would imagine that when the ship hit the pier/support column and pushed it forward that it stressed the whole bridge and that caused it to come apart and collapse.

I always keep an eye on shipping traffic driving over a large bridge. Very similar to the Sunshine Skyway collapse in 1980

Rivera, who was in the passenger seat, allegedly fired first at police, fatally striking Diller in the torso below his protective vest. Rivera was also struck by return fire and reportedly remains hospitalized. Like Rivera, the driver of the vehicle, 41-year-old Lindy Jones, also had at least 20 prior arrests, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Idaho is beautiful. I've only driven through Coeur d'Alene but the view coming down I-90 from the east is pretty cool. I haven't been to Sun Valley but
I hear good things. I love Shoshone Falls in southern Idaho (with the bonus of the Evil Knievel jump Snake River jump site being just downriver):

Agreed. 2003 spent multiple nights Boise, night in Idaho Falls on the way to the Grand Tetons & Yellowstone, and a night in Salmon on the way back to Boise. I’m pretty sure we drove through Twin Falls, but somehow missed Shoshone Falls..

Sept 2021 flew in to SLC for the JMU @ Weber St game. Made it an 11 day trip. Spent a couple nights in Idaho on the way up to Glacier NP. Stopped at Craters of the Moon Nat Monument- pretty cool.

On the way from Stanley to Missoula, drove the Yankee Fork Road (Sunbeam to Challis), past the ghost towns of Bonanza & Custer where they dredged for gold back in the day. Its 40+ miles of dirt/gravel, no cell coverage. Great scenery though.

With the 2023 itinerary, you might have gone by Twin Falls if you took the interstate instead of state highways on the way to Idaho Falls.

Thanks. For 2003 you’re correct. Looking at it I think we (ex gf & her family) took the highway (US 20, Boise to Jackson, WY) & not I86, both about the same timewise, under 6 hrs. That meant we missed Twin Falls (& therfore Shoshone Falls) Actually didn’t spend a night in Idaho Falls- just stopped at. Had only 5 nights WY (not nearly enough time to see Jackson, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone & Cody, but was out there again in 2015 for a week+). On the way back to Boise looped north into MT to hit the Little Bighorn Battlefield Nat Park, & then to Stanley. So have driven the whole stretch of the Salmon River Scenic Byway, part of it twice

SPOKANE, Wash. — The NCAA Tournament was supposed to be a fun experience for the University of Utah women's basketball team.

Instead, the team was met with racial hate crimes the first night the team was in its host location.

Utah was sent to Spokane for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, but was stationed in a hotel in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho — about 35 minutes away from the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane.

On Thursday night, the basketball team — along with members of the band and cheerleading team — gathered together at a restaurant for a dinner to celebrate the season. While walking to the restaurant, a white truck got near the team, revved its engines to make its presence known, and then yelled the N-word toward the team before speeding off.

"We all just were in shock, and we looked at each other like, did we just hear that? ... Everybody was in shock — our cheerleaders, our students that were in that area that heard it clearly were just frozen," Utah deputy athletics director Charmelle Green, who is Black, told KSL.com. "We kept walking, just shaking our heads, like I can't believe that."

The team carried on with its dinner, but two hours later were met with a similar situation as they started to leave the restaurant. This time, though, two trucks were present, revving their engines and making a lot of noise in an intimidating way, while yelling the N-word again to those present

Why were they 30 some miles away from Spokane? I lnow it was a host location for the mens West regional only because on the JMU board people memtioned it as a place they didn’t want JMU to get sent to due to travel time and cost for fans & JMU would hardly have any fans there. If there wasn’t enough hotel rooms in Spokane the NCAA shouldn’t have set both the men’s and women’s regionals to be in a city with not enough rooms. Idiots (the NCAA)..For a city to host they should have to guarantee that teams will be provided adequate lodging within say 15 or 20 miles of the arena..

There was also a regional youth volleyball tournament going on.

I’m still surprised there wasn’t something closer like in Spokane Valley. CDA is a cool town so maybe they figured the extra drive time was worth it? Regardless, it’s a bad look for both cities as they each promote travel and convention type hospitality.
