Is It Important 2 U Where Your Kids Net Out Politically....

Post by Cap'n Cat »

....when they're grown up?

The Cap'n and Mama Cat, though very liberal, always take great pains to present balanced answers to questions about politics and world affairs from Commander and Corporal Cat, 12 and 9, respectively. And, let me tell ya, it was hard to do as the Bush ship went tits up from 2005-2008.

Just want them to be respectful to everyone, no matter their stripes.

I think you are worrying too much about it, Cap'n. You probably couldn't indoctrinate them in any way if you wanted to. They have pop-culture, the media, friends, the internet, teachers, and college professors that will all shape their beliefs in some way. And pretty much everyone's political beliefs change at least some when they have to actually work for a living and support themselves. Just chill out about it. The Kittens will be fine.

I don't agree, Pwns. If I chose to be a "God Hates Fags" or KKK type of monster dad, they would cop some of it. Parents (or lack of) - #1 influence on kids.

That's okay, Uncle Pierce took care of their conservative indoctrination last spring...

Well, I don't think Pwns was speaking of the "six sigma" outlyer parents. :coffee:

Guaranteed the 12 year old does, and the 9 year old is on the verge of discovery.

Judging from the way Corporal Cat acted/reacted to Cap during the football season I would have to agree with Z here....

That could have just been the pre-teen hormones though...not really sure.

I have a friend who is brilliant. He's currently a professor at a highly regarded university but has spent much of his adult life studying abroad, learning different languages so he could study historical texts in their native tongue. He's without a doubt the most open minded and least judgemental person I know.

His father told him in the early teen years "to question everything in life, including me." And that's what he continues to do to this day.

Well except Ronald Reagan...
he's beyond questioning - after all he was a movie actor...

Sorry - that just fell out there - I would agree with your professor friend
1) question everything
2) be naturally suspicious of those claiming to be in authority
3) Measure twice cut once
4) Trust your intuition
5) Feelings change so don't get to attached to any one idea

It ain't that....it's just that 12-13 years old is that point in life where your dad don't know SHIT and you'd do anything to disagree with him.

I ended up with a conservative son and a liberal daughter. We love 'em both!

As an admirer of William F. Buckley, I'm less concerned with their position than with how they arrived at that position.

It's important to me that my daughter wants to learn to play the old-time fiddle and that my son has no felonies so far.

My daughter is unusually intelligent, so I suspect she will one day naturally slide to the right. If she doesn't, no biggie. I could personally care less what my kids' political ideologies are, as long as they have the essential life skills. You know- plowing, planting, tying two half-hitches, shooting, and tying flies.
