Where I come from, that word might as well be "n!gger."

Back in the day, some people called blacks "Maroons" because of the color of their eyes. In fact, I have read old police reports in Charleston from as recently as the early 1970s where under the block for eye color the response was "MAR", and in the block for hair color the response was "BNK" (black and kinky).

Nope, Bugs isn't saying moron. He is actually saying "maroon." It was a derogatory term for a moron that originated with the description of blacks. Keep in mind that you're referring to a cartoon that had its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s.
