Fatal flaw #1 - you assume illegal immigrants hold 12-20 million jobs.
Fatal flaw #2 - you assume 12-20 million unemployed Americans are willing to wash dishes, mow lawns and wash cars.

:ohno:

Yes, I am being a partisan hack here, but why else would he want it done before midterm elections, other than to pick up Democratic votes?

OR, it's how he finally gets to be a citizen

Obama took up the issue privately with his staff Monday in a bid to advance a bill through Congress before lawmakers become too distracted by approaching midterm elections.

In the session, Obama and members of his Domestic Policy Council outlined ways to resuscitate the effort in a White House meeting with two senators -- Democrat Charles E. Schumer of New York and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina -- who have spent months trying to craft a bill.

According to a person familiar with the meeting, the White House may ask Schumer and Graham to at least produce a blueprint that could be turned into legislative language.

The basis of a bill would include a path toward citizenship for the 10.8 million people living in the U.S. illegally. Citizenship would not be granted lightly, the White House said. Undocumented workers would need to register, pay taxes and pay a penalty for violating the law. Failure to comply might result in deportation.

Lots of them would vote Republican.

I will give you fatal flaw#1

I wont give you fatal flaw#2 if your going to say there are jobs available and Americans are too good to do them then everybody needs to STFU about unemployment in this country. There are jobs out there but this lazy country wont do them because they want it given to them they dont want to earn it.

#1 correct, once you take out any non working women and children (illegal- not born in US) its probably closer to 10 million.

#2 correct, but that's only because people have welfare and unemployment benefits that Congress keeps extending over and over. Yeah, who wouldn't take unemployment or welfare over doing many of those jobs? Get rid of many of the illegals and stop giving unemployed and those who refuse to look for work Americans more unemployment and welfare. There's about 10 million jobs in construction, agriculture, landscaping, processing restaurant kitchens, maid services, factories etc (the jobs that have high numbers of illegals) that they could fill.

The notion that Americans won't do those jobs isn't true. They won't do those jobs as long as they can find better jobs or can get unemployment & welfare. They will do those jobs if its between that and homeless on the street.

The kids? OK, it's not their fault.

But the illegal aliens? There is no reason to ever reward their law breaking behavior with citizenship.

Find another way to give them a break, but not citizenship.

I agree, but we also shouldn't be rewarding the law breaking behavior of their employers.

I say kick 'em all out including the illegal employers, and let's do our own laundry and eat canned vegetables during the winter. :thumb:

Yep. Let's do all the laundry. Same law for everyone.

If the law needs changed, then change it. I am for LEGAL immigration and guest worker visas, but NOT for REWARDING ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR!

This would be similar to Reagan's amnesty. Illegals would be given a chance to register, and get on the path to citizenship, which means it would be years before they would be eligible for citizenship.

Why don't we just go into more debt from China, buy Mexico and Cuba, and then they'll all be citizens. Problem solved.

I realize that it is a PATH and people MIGHT be deported. With that being said, do you really think if an illegal doesn't pay the penalty for violating the law they will be deported and denied citizenship? As for paying taxes, you can't tax someone who has only JUST become a citizen can you? So, that only really leaves one requirement to be eligible to vote - register.

I have no issue with providing a path to citizenship with the listed caveats, but find the timing very beneficial to Obama. Even if it doesn't work out that all 10.8 million become eligible to vote, he is still trying to sway their vote to the Democratic side.
That's the way politics work. Both parties try and do things that are beneficial to them.

Denying citizenship and social benefits to lawbreakers could be part of a sensible solution which neither rewards the lawbreakers nor punishes their children.

The only lines that aren't crossed these days are party lines.

I don't think Obama is out of line with this. If we use upcoming elections as an excuse we'll never get anything done...which may be a good thing.

That actually is hilarious houndawg. I remember the fun I had with some of my liberal friends that kept talking about how Bush stole the election due to one company having the majority of the machines. Well, this time it was Obama in which the Youtube video was making the round "proving" how he stole the election because of those machines.

For some reason, it apparently didn't hit home with them like it did when it was Bush instead of Obama.

I could be totally wrong, but the ONLY benefit of being a citizen is voting rights.
Q: To get Social Security retirement benefits, must a person be a United States citizen? -Tanya Hunte, Brooklyn

A: No. An individual can get Social Security retirement benefits so long as he or she is “lawfully present” in the United States. The person need not become a U.S. citizen. Individuals considered lawfully present include permanent residents, asylees and refugees, lawful nonimmigrants [such as a student], people granted temporary protected status, asylum applicants, certain parolees and a few others whom the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has allowed to stay.

I do not have a problem with anyone who lawfully worked here from receiving their earned social security. They will have to take their fair share in cuts like the rest of us when this unsustainable ponzi scheme blows up, but as long as they are legal, they should not be discriminated against.

I don't disagree, but my point to Jon was being on the "road to citizenship" is just as good as being a citizen. You can get a job, get a mortgage, get social security... the only thing you can't do is vote. He made it sound like they'd still have a tough path to travel. Baloney.

Exactly. Giving a path to citizenship to illegals would be grossly unfair to millions in the past and present who entered this country LEGALLY and WAITED in line like everyone else, for years or even decades, to earn the privilege of becoming a US citizen.
