Actually, it's not because using the terms "straight" and "lesbian" are not associated with a conscious effort to avoid use of the term "homosexual" in order to control attitudes to some extent. Think about it. How often do you see the term "homosexual" used nowdays? That's no accident.

In my experience, however limited it may be, gay is frowned upon when used by a straight person way more often than it is allowed.
