First Graders Vote

Post by JoltinJoe »

Here deep in blue state New York, my son's first grade class cast their votes today for the next President of the United States.

Brian cast his vote for Barack Obama. Pundits observe you can learn about parents' voting habits from asking young grammar school students about their preference, so I'll let you know tomorrow who the first graders selected, and then compare that to the town's overall voting patterns.

"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

The vote in the distict for our local school was 353 for Obama; 266 for McCain. So Obama carried the district with 57% of the vote.

The teachers announce the results of the voting today. 82 first graders, so if children's preferences mirror their parents' preferences, we should expect about 45-47 votes for Obama.

Well, it seems they only told them the results for their own class. Brian's class went 13-7 for Obama, or 65%. But the limited sample seems to distort our little test.

No big deal, though, because it seems I'm the only interested in whether it is true that children actually express their parents' preference in presidential elections. :(

Brian woke up this morning and asked first thing, "Did Barack Obama win." So I showed him the headline of the paper, "It's Obama." Big grin, ear to ear. The kid has no grasp that what happened is truly historic.

All I told him was that Barack Obama is a dirty socialist who wants to take daddy's money.

My daughter's 2nd grade class voted too. Obama won the election (she couldn't remember the count). Our county went for McCain. But there are a lot of old people here that I doubt would vote for a black man.
