The United States is a representative Republic. One of its fundamental principles is that the People are the final authority. People are supposed to try to influence the direction of government through voicing their opinions and arguments to try to convince other people to come around to their point of view as well as to vote in order to have an impact. That's very different from the idea of the Catholic Church. I was born into a Catholic family and went to parochial school for 9 1/2 years. Everyone else in my family is still Catholic. I have a brother who is all into theology and Catholic tradition and studies it all the time. It is a "top down" organization. The layity have no "right" to influence Church positions. They have no vote.Nobody is forcing you to remain an American.
Wouldn't you more respect people that want to stay and make it better?
Plus you don't have to really "leave" anything to leave the Catholic Church. You can work the same job, live in the same house, etc. All you have to do is say "I am no longer a Catholic" and quit participating. I did. It's easy.
