Gibbs Blast Professional Left over Obama Criticism

Post by Gil Dobie »

Looking for somebody to blame............

Link
WASHINGTON — Festering tensions between the Obama White House and liberal activists flared Tuesday, with press secretary Robert Gibbs scolding what he called "the professional left" for its vocal objections to President Barack Obama's record.

In an interview with The Hill newspaper, the president's chief spokesman voiced disdain for liberal critics who've likened Obama to former President George W. Bush.

"These people ought to be drug tested," Gibbs said. "They will be satisfied when we have Canadian health care and we've eliminated the Pentagon. That's not reality. They wouldn't be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president."

Later in the day Gibbs put out a statement saying he had spoken "inartfully."

"I watch too much cable, I admit," he said.

Still, the dustup underscored the tough political position in which the president finds himself. Left and right are unhappy with him, narrowing the political base that Obama needs to pass legislation and avoid losses in the November midterm elections.

Until this point, Obama and liberal activists have largely minimized their disagreements in public. But Gibbs' comments could strain the uneasy alliance.

The backlash was swift.

Dr. Quentin Young, a Chicago physician and national coordinator of Physicians for a National Health Program, which advocates for single-payer health care, said he was "incredulous" when he first heard the comments. Young, an early supporter of Obama, wrote Gibbs and asked for an immediate retraction.
"I believe that unless you retract the insulting description of deeply committed citizens you will drive off those of us who supported the president's campaign and have anguished over the fruitless lurches to the right that have characterized the first half of the president's first term," Young wrote.

Gibbs's did not preside at the news briefing Tuesday, sending deputy press secretary Bill Burton to take his place.

The rift between the White House and the left has been intensifying for some time.

Liberal activists have been unhappy that Obama has failed to:

Allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Push through a bill that would provide a path to legal status for illegal immigrants.

Provide a government-run insurance program that would compete with private health insurers — the so-called "public option."

Put a stop to some of the practices that Bush used in combating terrorism.

Obama's base is corporate america, he's part of Native's "political class" and more and more people are waking up to it.

And the "professional left" responds.

Robert Gibbs attacks the fringe losers of the left
By Glenn Greenwald

You may think that the reason you're dissatisfied with the Obama administration is because of substantive objections to their policies: that they've done so little about crisis-level unemployment, foreclosures and widespread economic misery. Or because of the White House's apparently endless devotion to Wall Street. Or because the President has escalated a miserable, pointless and unwinnable war that is entering its ninth year. Or because he has claimed the power to imprison people for life with no charges and to assassinate American citizens without due process, intensified the secrecy weapons and immunity instruments abused by his predecessor, and found all new ways of denying habeas corpus. Or because he granted full-scale legal immunity to those who committed serious crimes in the last administration. Or because he's failed to fulfill -- or affirmatively broken -- promises ranging from transparency to gay rights.

But Robert Gibbs -- in one of the most petulant, self-pitying outbursts seen from a top political official in recent memory, half derived from a paranoid Richard Nixon rant and the other half from a Sean Hannity/Sarah Palin caricature of The Far Left -- is here to tell you that the real reason you're dissatisfied with the President is because you're a fringe, ideological, Leftist extremist ingrate who needs drug counseling:

The White House is simmering with anger at criticism from liberals who say President Obama is more concerned with deal-making than ideological purity.

During an interview with The Hill in his West Wing office, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted liberal naysayers, whom he said would never regard anything the president did as good enough.

"I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested," Gibbs said. "I mean, it's crazy."

The press secretary dismissed the “professional left” in terms very similar to those used by their opponents on the ideological right, saying, "They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon. That’s not reality."

Of those who complain that Obama caved to centrists on issues such as healthcare reform, Gibbs said: “They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president."

The White House, constantly under fire from expected enemies on the right, has been frustrated by nightly attacks on cable news shows catering to the left, where Obama and top lieutenants like Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have been excoriated for abandoning the public option in healthcare reform; for not moving faster to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay; and for failing, so far, to end the ban on gays serving openly in the military. . . .

Gibbs said the professional left is not representative of the progressives who organized, campaigned, raised money and ultimately voted for Obama.

Progressives, Gibbs said, are the liberals outside of Washington “in America,” and they are grateful for what Obama has accomplished in a shattered economy with uniform Republican opposition and a short amount of time.

So, to recap: (1) The Professional Left are totally irrelevant losers who speak for absolutely nobody, and certainly nobody in Real America who matters; but (2) they're ruining everything for the White House!!! And: if you criticize the President, it's only because you're such a rabid extremist that you harbor a secret desire to eliminate the Pentagon -- that's how anti-American you are! You're such a Far Left extremist that Dennis Kucinich isn't far enough Left for you, you subversive, drug-using hippies! You're so far to the Left that you want to turn the U.S. into Canada. As David Frum put it today: "More proof of my longtime thesis, Repub pols fear the GOP base; Dem pols hate the Dem base."

The Democrats have been concerned about a lack of enthusiasm on the part of their base headed into the midterm elections. These sorts of rabid, caricatured, Fox-News-copying attacks on the Left will undoubtedly help generate more enthusiasm -- more loud clapping -- for the Democrats. I know I'm eager to go canvass and clap for Democrats after reading Gibbs' noble, inspiring vision. If it were Gibbs' goal to be as petulant and self-pitying as possible, what could he have done differently?

Perhaps one day the White House can work itself up to express this sort of sputtering rage against the Right, or the Wall Street thieves who destroyed the American economy, or the permanent factions that control Washington. Until then, we'll have to satisfy ourselves with White House explanations that the Real Culprits are not (of course) them, but the Professional Left, that is simultaneously totally irrelevant and ruining everything. I'll give credit to Gibbs for putting his name on this outburst: these are usually the things they say anonymously and then deny afterward on the record that it's what they think.

UPDATE: On September 9, 2008 -- roughly two months before the election -- Barack Obama addressed a large, enthusiastic crowd and said: "As president, I will lead a new era of accountability in education. But see, I don't just want to hold our teachers accountable; I want to hold our government accountable. I want you to hold me accountable." In 20 short months, we've gone from "hold me accountable" to "get drug tested," you wretched ingrates.

The arrogance of the Obama White House is astounding.

If they only attacked the people that opposed Obama's stated platform with the vigor that they do the people that actually voted for Obama, they might get something done.

A lot of Progressives are going to sit out this election because of shit like this.

The thing is, they do. I love the comment that they've cozied up to Wall Street. Heck, how many times can Obama come out and call them all "fat cats" and the sole reason why the economy collapsed? There's a reason why Wall Street is moving away from Obama and the Dems this time around and it isn't because he's gotten too cozy with them. And they've clearly let the racism charge against the Tea Party continue and they've fanned that flame as well. In reality, one of their biggest problems is that they attack almost everyone now - when you do that, there's very few people left who've been unscathed.

I do agree that his inability to do somethings he said he'd do (close Guantanamo, lift don't ask don't tell) are things that grate the Left, and in all honesty, neither was too difficult to do (he could simply find another Guantanamo for the people he can't release and I've always said that he could just Executive Order the don't ask don't tell thing - it would still need a lot of work to make happen, but he'd be out in front on the issue).

But IMO, his major problem has been that he hasn't set his agenda - he let the Democratic Congress do that. Getting the supermajority was one of the worst things to happen to his Presidency as he let himself be guided by their priorities and interests. There was a lot of assumptions that the economic recovery would just take care of itself so they used the stimulus to fund some pork and then decided to spend a year on health care while leaving big things like financial reform and energy reform just sitting around as things they would push through later, letting people fret about what those things could actually look like. Congress was never popular and for good reason and he let them frame what his first two years have been and now he's suffering the consequence of that. It's kind of odd, because one of Bush's major failings was his inability to properly corral what became an extremely dysfunctional and out of touch Republican led Congress. It's very odd to see a different President make the exact same mistake right after his predecessor did.

Oh c'mon Jon - what planet do you live on? Stimulus, health care, government motors, fin regs, immigration, etc etc have all been done while vilifying GOP opposition. Apparently we're all Bush clones, and will be again during every single election cycle while Obama's relevant.

So, the arguement here, in a nutshell is...

I'm more left....no, I'm more left....no you're not, I'm more leftist...

The poll I'd really like to see is, given the chance to do 2008 all over again, would you still vote for Obama (as a donk, the primary or as an independent in the general). :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

I'm guessin' those numbers wouldn't be pretty--even given that he's got an automatic 15,000,000 vote lead from the black contingent. :coffee: :coffee:

Rasmussen's numbers have been volatile this month. After starting with -19 on the 1st, Obummer climbed back up to -10 on the 8th, barely into double digits and his best showing since 28 June, before plunging today to -22, matching his lowest rating ever on the 26th of May. The fraud in chief's Rasmussen average for July was -17.0, the worst monthly average of his presidency.
