The Tequila Party

Post by ∞∞∞ »

Latino leaders in Nevada and nationwide are quietly debating whether to sever their traditional Democratic ties and form an independent grass-roots political group.

The idea, born of frustration over the party’s inaction on immigration reform and fears that as a voting bloc they’re a political afterthought, Latino leaders have discussed the idea among themselves locally and in conference calls with colleagues across the country.

The unlikely model for the movement they would like to launch is the Tea Party — not in substance, of course, but in its grass-roots organizational style. Acknowledging the source of their inspiration, Latino leaders have dubbed the proposed movement the “Tequila Party.”

These Hispanic leaders have noticed that while the Tea Party has had spotty electoral success, it has called attention to its concerns and values and put the establishment on notice.

Pretty interesting and refreshing to see new political groups (ie. Tea Party) challenge the two-party system. Not really sure yet what to think of a party based completely on the 'causes of a specific race, but I still think it's cool that it's being considered. And apparently this idea is gaining some major momentum.

Until I checked the link (a legit news outlet), I thought this was a joke.

I know they're riffing on the Tea Party name, but it doesn't really work for me. The Tea Party organizers are capitalizing (rather crassly, I might add) on the original Tea Party which protested unfair British taxation without representation, a key issue among many for today's Tea Party. I just can't see anything resembling that in the "Tequila Party."

The Tequila Party would come with its very own theme song.... from The Champs, via PeeWee Herman! :thumb:

Wille Nelson Creates 'Teapot Party' for Marijuana Legalization

Willie Nelson's arrest for pot possession over the weekend has not deterred the Texan from smoking the illegal substance. In fact, it has only fueled his determination to further advocate the legalization of marijuana.

"Tax it, regulate it and legalize it," Willie stated to CelebStoner.com following his arrest. "And stop the border wars over drugs. Why should the drug lords make all the money? Thousands of lives will be saved."

Willie, who was arrested at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint the morning of November 26, has already created a new group to focus on his efforts. "There's the Tea Party. How about the Teapot Party?," he suggests. "Our motto: We lean a little to the left." Only two days after his arrest -- and subsequent release after posting a $2,500 bond -- the 77-year old started 'Willie Nelson's Teapot Party' Facebook page to create awareness of his new cause.

The group, which already has more than 5,000 followers, has earned the respect of several high-profile celebrities, including actor and comedian Tommy Chong. "If Willie gets behind something, you know it's going to be big and in your face," Tommy tells CelebStoner. "Any pot party is a wonderful idea."

I love it! But could the Teapot Party adherents find their way to the polls on election day? :?

"the success of the tea party" the greatest political misnomer of the last 30 years perhaps.

tea party is nothing more or less than base republicans organizing in a different way... think the howard dean democrats and meetups in around 2002-2004. they've brought very little new blood to their party it's just the same activists with a different label... the national tea party movement is run by dick armey for chrissakes... the "tea party" was largely a media-created phenomenon (with the help of the gop's biggest consulting firms) and reflects nothing new politically - just angry middle aged white people who feel entitled to power expressing shock and disbelief that they lost an election.

this is, undoubtedly, a tiny fringe movement of latino dems... who will end up being an issue based faction within the party.

of course, maybe i'm wrong, given the rampant and unchecked success of single-issue parties in american political history, i'm sure this will also be a success... i mean, president wallace was able to keep segregation around, and we still have free silver, and thanks to the know-nothings all those Papists were sent back to Eastern Euro... oh wait...

I'd argue that the Tea Party for better or worse served as a shot across the bow of the neo-Cons to refocus on the party ideals. To what extent it will be successful is really unknown, but no question it shook things up considerably this November along with huge anti-incumbent sentiment.

Why would anyone want to hang out with a chick who intentionally screwed over a football player?

Learn a little history.Please. The Boston Tea Party was a response to un-regulated/under regulated capitalism, specifically, the East India Company.
The directors of the company attempted to avert bankruptcy by appealing to Parliament for financial help. This led to the passing of the Tea Act in 1773, which gave the Company greater autonomy in running its trade in America, and allowed it an exemption from the tea tax which its colonial competitors were required to pay. When the American colonists, who included tea merchants, were told of the act, they tried to boycott it, claiming that, although the price had gone down on the tea when enforcing the act, it was a tax all the same, and the king should not have the right to just have a tax for no apparent reason. The arrival of tax-exempt Company tea, undercutting the local merchants, triggered the Boston Tea Party in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, one of the major events leading up to the American Revolution.

The modern tea party is nothing more than a reincarnation of John Birch Society.

Not her best picture, by any means, in fact her face looks like you could play marbles on it, but I'd still hit it. And then wash myself for about 24 hours. But then probably hit it again. And wash. Endless cycle.
