"Conservative" Values At Their Finest

Post by Appaholic »

The rampant hypocrisy of Dick Cheney lives on for the ages.........

Commentary: Cheney says U.S. can torture but can't heal

Dick Cheney has finally found the limits of government power.

According to recently released legal memos from the Bush-Cheney administration, the former vice president believes that the federal government can ignore the First Amendment and suppress free speech and freedom of the press as part of its "war on terror."........

.......Former Vice President Cheney also believes, according to these same memos, that the federal government can send troops to burst into the homes of American citizens without a search warrant, despite the Fourth Amendment's protection against such unreasonable searches. He believes that the federal government has the right to arrest an American citizen on American soil and hold him in prison without charges. He believes that the federal government can listen in on your phone conversations without a court order......

........It is also a breathtakingly expansive view of federal power over citizens. Indeed, the position of Cheney and his allies seems to be that the federal government has limitless power over people. If the government can censor the free press, restrict free speech, listen in on your private conversations, burst into your home, take you away, hold you in prison without charges and torture you, it raises an interesting question: What on Earth does Dick Cheney think the federal government can't do?

Thanks to John King, we now know: Cheney believes that the government cannot help with health care, improve education or wean America off Middle East oil. I'm not kidding.

Cheney, whose authoritarian impulses run deep, is suddenly worried that the federal government might become too powerful under President Obama.

"I worry a lot," he told King, "that they're using the current set of economic difficulties to try to justify a massive expansion in the government, and much more authority for the government over the private sector. I don't think that's good. I don't think that's going to solve the problem."

Set aside the, umm, irony of a guy who is alive, thank God, because of government-provided health care opposing health care for taxpaying Americans. And set aside the hypocrisy of the Bush-Cheney Medicare prescription drug entitlement, the greatest expansion of the federal role in health care since President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Focus instead on Cheney's alarmist rhetoric: "a massive expansion in the government", "much more authority for the government." Cheney is comfortable with a government that has the authority to torture, imprison, censor and kill. Just not a government that has the capacity and compassion to write a health insurance policy or take on Big Oil.

ummmm....so Cheney didn't say those remarks he was quoted as saying?....

I'm no fan of CNN (nor Fox), but to suggest CNN would "create" and attribute direct quotes to Cheny he did not make.....well, if you don't think Cheney would have sued their asses, you don't know Dick.

Bucdad, please take off the blinders...

Cheney/Bush so greatly expanded the reach of the federal government at the cost of the Constitution that it could take us decades to recover...if we ever do...

Our founding fathers have been spinning in their graves over what the previous administration did in the name of fighting terrorism...

Now, they are continuing to spin over what the present administration is trying to do to continue that expansion of federal powers...

So, I do find it just slightly disgraceful for Cheney to be so concerned about the current administration, when his own was at least as dishonest...

But, I understand, Cheney approves of expanding federal power in areas he likes, and disapproves in areas he doesn't like...the ultimate hipocrite

Cheney is a doucebag, but I'm not so sure he is a hypocrite.

Obama has shown no signs of wanting to abolish the military commissions act, the 'patriot' act, and FISA. That, and he is promoting even bigger government (on economic terms) than Bush/Cheney.

Obama = a socially liberal and more fiscally irresponsible George W. Bush.

Cheney is a hypocrite because he calls himself a "conservative." Or, if you don't like hypocrite, he's a liar. Worthless.

Cheney's right about Obama. He would be absolutely correct if he had said the same thing about himself and Bush as well. Not in charge of keeping us minions in our place anymore makes it time to be a hypocritical douchbag. I just wish Ron Paul were in his late forties or early fifties because I think this country will be ready for someone of his ilk when we're done with this term. I'm a hack for even saying this but they are all a bunch of fucking asshats.

What you're saying is that you expected Obama to do things the repub's way, and by not doing that, he has broken a "promise" to you by not "working" with the GOP.

How old are you sonny? 8-)

Uh, WRONG.

He did try to work with the GOP. The GOP wouldn't work with him. The only way the GOP agreed to work with Obama was if Obama followed 100% of the GOP's FAILED PHILOSOPHY.

The American Public was very clear that they did not want Obama to do that...

I don't see it that way. Obama did reach across the aisle and try to include the Repubs in the discussions about the stimulating pork package but the two sides were unable to come to agreement on the best balance (spending vs. tax cuts) to stimulate the economy (and their own contributers & egos). They then separated and both sides started pointing fingers. I will give Obama credit for making the effort though (something W wouldn't have done).

The problem with the stranglehold that the Dem's currently have is that they will rarely need Repub support to get something passed so their efforts at bipartisan collaboration will likely be to give Repubs the opportunity to provide their input without any real say in what the final outcome is. While this is better than what we've had in the recent past it isn't really working together. It is however the political reality.
