I want to start with some apologies. For the record, here and upfront, I apologise for having spent several years ripping up GM crops. I am also sorry that I helped to start the anti-GM movement back in the mid 1990s, and that I thereby assisted in demonising an important technological option which can be used to benefit the environment.

As an environmentalist, and someone who believes that everyone in this world has a right to a healthy and nutritious diet of their choosing, I could not have chosen a more counter-productive path. I now regret it completely.

So I guess you'll be wondering-what happened between 1995 and now that made me not only change my mind but come here and admit it? Well, the answer is fairly simple: I discovered science, and in the process I hope I became a better environmentalist.

Not that a lot of us didn't already know the Greenpeace nuts were full of crap on this issue.

I wonder how much more starvation and childhood blindness occurred due to Greenpeace quacks scaring African countries s***less over genetically-modified food.

Don't forget to throw much of Europe under the bus on this one too. I mean, "Frankenfood" was a great marketing slogan to fight against, and their threats to cut off trade with underdeveloped countries that were dependent on agricultural exports to the EU if they even touched a GM seed were more than enough of a deterrent to stay away from the stuff no matter how hungry their own populations became. It's not a realistic scientific position to say that something needs to demonstrate that it will never in any way harm anything before we start using it, as was the position taken up by the greens back then. You can never completely prove a negative. Just more examples of people being scared of science and evil "chemicals".

I got to shoot a gene gun to modify corn DNA.

Even after that experience I have no issue with GMO.

Now hormone treatment in animals is a completely different story.

Dairy cows eventually end up in feed lots where hormones are spread to other animals and humans via urine, feces then dust. Feed lots have toxic levels of hormones and antibiotics in the dust and consequently in the meat.
