Controlling the Message

Post by Baldy »

Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it's up, says study
Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.

Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.

In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.

The number of gun killings dropped 39% between 1993 and 2011, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported in a separate report released Tuesday. Gun crimes that weren’t fatal fell by 69%.
However, guns still remain the most common murder weapon in the United States, the report noted. Between 1993 and 2011, more than two out of three murders in the U.S. were carried out with guns, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found.
Kudos to the LA Times for doing an actual random act of journalism. :thumb:

So, what you're telling me is that gun control laws implemented in the mid 1990's have worked?

No. Permitted and open carry has worked.

Man, when I look at the amount of armed crimes in the news nowadays in Delaware versus where I live in Virginia, you can really see the difference. I don't live in one of the uppercrust VA counties either.

When a criminal has that bit of doubt that his victim might be armed, it's quite a deterrent.

Just an observation and not necessarily germane but one of todays problems is that the devil has a lot of advocates and few of them are playing.

An inconvenient truth for truth for the anti-self protection folks, but at the end of the day it won't matter.

With all the hype about gun violence, 53% of the population and 53% of the idiot politicians will refuse to believe the truth and will buy in to faulty logic that by disarming law abiding citizens the country will be safer.

Well, apparently 53% of the politicians WON'T buy into it when their reelection is at stake.

I control my guns just fine. Very nice groupings at 25, 50 and 75 feet with the handguns.

I could care less what 53% of the population thinks. It doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter what non registered people think.
It doesn't matter what people who are registered but don't vote think.
It matters some what people who are registered but only vote in presidential elections think.
It matters most what people who consistently vote in state and mid term elections think.

Eh. Violent crime as a whole has dropped pretty fucking significantly since the 1990's.

Freakonomics argues it's tied to the 18 year anniversary of legal abortions after Roe v. Wade (1991). Is it? I dunno.

But, what's really disturbing is that the number of people imprisoned has continued to rise as violent crimes have gone off a cliff. :ohno:

I can't link from my phone, but I'd suggest Googling about the drop in crime since we've eliminated lead from gasoline and paint. Lead attacks that part of the brain.
