For every successful "functioning" pothead, there are hundreds whose minds have been blown away by chronic cannabis abuse.
There's no possible way you could know that to be true. I can't prove it's NOT true either but I seriously doubt it because of anecdotal experience. When I was in college everybody I hung around with smoked pot on a very regular basis. I can't think of a single one that became a vegetable. They all functioned fine. Maybe they would've functioned even better if they hadn't smoked pot every day and done other drugs as available as well. But they functioned fine.

Me, I smoked it every day while working a full time job, making a little additional extra money by writing for the school newspaper, and going to school full time. I smoked it every morning with my coffee then I smoked it periodically all day every day.

I don't smoke it anymore but I smoked it for decades. My biggest accomplishments came during that time. In fact I think smoking it enhanced my creativity. Can't prove that; but all of the ideas I had that ended up having an impact on the field I'm in came during that time and I frequently had "Eureka" moments while being high, listening to music, and thinking.

Sure, I can believe it likely that someone can take measurements and demonstrate some impacts of smoking marijuana. But this thing about it being likely to turn somebody into a vegetable who can't function and is a menace to society is total nonsense.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

"Eureka" moments like:

a) It's ok to fuck the family dog. Hell, he's YOUR dog, right? And while your at it, give that pussycat a whirl, too. :thumb:
b) It's ok to fuck the neighbor's 14 year old daughter. Never mind that you're a 39 year old, still llving in your parents basement...it's the natural order of things.... :coffee:
c) If you think your drunk and about to drive home, have one more good stiff drink, just to be sure. Drunk driving never killed nobody, right? :dunce:

BTW, greatest pot eureka moment I witnessed was a friend, who was a super smart engineer, said on a very hot day with the air conditioner broken... "Why don't we turn the oven really low, to like 50 and cool off the apartment?".

Of all my college-educated, life-long friends...

...three continued smoking daily throughout their adult lives.

One went from managing a graphic arts design company to, now, selling vinyl windows by appt.

One went from being a radiologist for 7 years, to doing residential landscape maintenance.

The last went from being a Tax Agency supervisor, to living off his daughter's SSI, and eventually, when she became an adult, shifted to welfare for the past decade.

All three lost their "major" career jobs for failing to show up for work.

Musta been a revelation.

So, were they dumbasses because of the pot? Or were they dumbasses who happened to smoke pot? It's pretty disingenuous to blame the pot for their demise since the majority of pot smokers don't lose their jobs unless they were irresponsible to begin with....same as irresponsible drinkers....and, for your friend's sake, I hope they don't dismiss their misfortunes as only because of the pot without taking a hard look within themselves.... :coffee:

Sure. TMan's claiming pot diminishes your capacity to think, be successful, etc....in other words, without the pot, his friends would have remained successful. I think it has more to do with his friends decision-making ability more than the pot since, not everyone who smokes pot loses their job, moves in with their kids, etc. I contend his friends probably had an innate tendency towards being a dumbass prior to smoking the pot. Now they're just using the "pot made me do it" defense for their irresponsible actions.

You kinda missed my point. I know very few adults who continue to smoke pot (regularly) into adulthood. The ones I do know that do are mostly dumbasses (no offense to anyone here) and were the ones who were heavy smokers before. A little bit of the chicken and the egg here.

Something tells me that you're not the type of person who associates with 'those' kind of people who still smoke pot. Or you're not even aware that they still smoke pot because they keep it wrapped up and hidden closed doors (and this crowd is MUCH larger than many people realize).

You're right. Most of my friends are well past those days. But I'm curious... how would you define "those kind of people"?

People who still smoke pot, no matter who frequently or infrequently.

You might be surprised to find out that some of your friends aren't past those days. They may just choose not to reveal themselves, for whatever reason...their job...their family...the stigma it brings from those who think they know better...

I smoke as often as my schedule will allow and I run one of the largest and most profitable medical practices in the upstate of SC. We just had the best year of our existence, amid on of the worst financial environments I as a business man have ever seen. One of my buddies runs a high profile IT company with clients in the fortune 500. He is having a banner year as well, and actually planning an expansion and hiring blitz in the near future. Another close friend is a controlling partner in a very successful law firm. Another is a senior partner in a large medical practice and surgical center that makes money hand over fist. I can keep going for as long as you want me to. I personally know well over 100 folks with personal incomes well into the six figures and a couple in the seven figures who regularly enjoy a nice fatty or two or three. Your theory is invalid. :coffee:
Dear lord... please allow this dangerous combination of hair spary, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me. All my Best, Earlie Cuyler.
