That's the danger of protests - it's great to get rid of some pent up anger and energy, but it almost never leads to sustained, concrete positions and a view to the long term.

I'm not sure how I feel about greatly increasing pipelines throughout America - obviously at some point there's a fall off in terms of the return on investment. However, considering this pipeline was massive and pretty much done except for this one crossing (of which apparently there are already other crossings that lead to this place anyway) it always seemed like political cowardice on Obama's administration to let this one spot get blocked by protests.
It was symbolism more than anything else. Obama cared about image.

Agreed, scoring some points on the way out even if it didn't change reality. Like Adams and all those midnight appointments of Federalist judges just as his term was ending. And just as ineffective.

Yeah, thank God we don't have a president like that anymore!

Eh.... Symbolism < Taking Action. It's good to make a point and stand, but not when it's futile. Obama failed to pick his battles.

Looks like the water is getting polluted earlier than expected, and worse than expected, and from the camp waste of the paid rioters.

Water Link

They say there's not enough progress being made to remove the waste before the area is flooded. They say camp conditions are already deteriorating due to spring melting and runoff, and the wet conditions combined with human waste and trash are creating a potential public health and environmental disaster.

The paid protest groups projected a lot of good examples of FAKE news. Here is one where a young girl was said to be mauled by a security dog. This is a doctored photo from a 2012 NY times article.

Evolution of a Peaceful Protest

Post by Gil Dobie »

Interesting read on the DAPL protest. Big money took over from the Native peaceful prayer protest.

Evolution of a peaceful protest link

“I went out to those camps as they were being formed, Red Warrior camp consisted of people who were intent on creating trouble and problems from the start. They intended to disrupt everything and everybody, thus creating problems then decided to leave.

The overflow camp consisted of everyone else who thought they should be a part of this protest, but had no idea of why? Hundreds of people were soon descending on Standing Rock with the intent of taking part in a peaceful, prayerful, non-violent protest to try and stop this pipeline from being completed. Thus putting an end to the route. This was the intent. But as you read, this did not happen…

What would you do if someone published your address and told others to go to your house and take care of business while you were out of town?

Greenpeace Being Sued for Racketeering

Post by Gil Dobie »

Interesting turn of events.

Link

The developer of the contentious Dakota Access Pipeline filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday, Aug. 22, alleging several groups "incited, funded and facilitated crimes and acts of terrorism" in their efforts against the oil pipeline.

The 187-page racketeering lawsuit, filed by Energy Transfer Equity and Energy Transfer Partners, lists Greenpeace, Earth First!, BankTrack and 20 unnamed individuals as defendants.

It alleges the group of "co-conspirators" made and "disseminated materially false and misleading information about Energy Transfer and the Dakota Access Pipeline for the purpose of fraudulently inducing donations, interfering with pipeline construction activities and damaging Energy Transfer's critical business and financial relationships," according to a news release.
The lawsuit seeks damages, the amount of which would be determined at trial, and to prevent the defendants from "engaging in continued wrongful activity" while requiring them to give up money "they have improperly secured."

The $3.8 billion pipeline runs from western North Dakota to Illinois. After months of protests near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, the pipeline began commercial service this summer.

IF this suit gets legs, it will be very ironic because of the precedents it will rest on
