You know what would be better? If people didn't have to use leave for fucking cancer, and we didn't live in a nation where someone has to donate leave so another can scrap a little more money together.

The vast riches of this nation...and workers have to donate leave. What. The. Fuck.

I mean, let's be fair. 26 of the cases on the list below happened on Obama's watch and 4 have happened on Trump's. By your logic, Obama must have been the worst President in American history:

My Mom used to head her teacher's union Sick Bank board. Every teacher (via the contract) contributed 1 day a year to the Bank, and teachers that ran out could apply for some of the bank. Per the contract, she had access to the number of sick days taken in prior years. The teachers that always took the maximum days yearly, and carried zero over had a tough task to convince Mom to get days from the bank. The teachers that banked some every year building up a nice balance but then had a major illness always got some of the bank.

Mom was able to retire a year early by applying all her banked sick time.
Good on her. That's the way it should be.

My mom had a full year of sick leave when she retired from the civil service. Under the CSRS (the old civil service retirement), that means she got that year counted as service, so she gets an extra 2% of her high-3 annual salary each year for life. Pretty sweet deal. Obama actually revised FERS (the new system) so that we can now credit our sick leave as creditable service as well. That means an extra 1.1% tacked on to my retirement.

Thanks Obama!

Well, that was the good part of the Obama tweak. The bad part was that he hosed new entrants to civil service on their pension contribution rate. Older guys like me and CID are required to contribute 0.8% of our salary each paycheck toward our pension.

Starting in 2013, Obama required new hires to contribute 3.1 percent. For those first hired in 2014 or later, the new contribution rate is 4.4 percent.

So, a person hired 2014 or later makes effectively 3.6% less (4.4-0.8) than a person hired in 2012 and in the same pay grade and step.

Youch.

So the fiscally conservative thing to do - make the workers contribute more for the great return they are getting.

What percentage of your salary will your pension be?

It wasn’t an Obama thing as much as FERS employees. FERS employees were not saving their leave like the CSRS (I am CSRS) were as there was no long term benefit of doing so. Obama had to change that to cut back on excessive leave usage.

BTW, Jon,the way your mother did things was the proper usage of leave and donated leave. Also, from your post about her, she sounds like a tremendous individual.

If I retire at my minimum retirement age of 57, the formula is .01 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x years of service. If I wait until 62, the .01 in the above formula becomes .011.

So: At 57, I'll have 33 years of service. So that's .01 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x 33. My pension would be 33% of my high three.

If I work until 62, the formula would be .011 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x 38. My pension would be 41.8% of my high three.

My retirement will consist of the previously mentioned 33-41.8% pension, my Thrift Saving Plan (TSP, what our 401K is called)) payouts, and Social Security. I'm hoping my TSP matures to a level that I actually make more money per year in retirement than I do working.

I also have to weight the pros/cons of retiring at 57 versus 62. My federal job qualifies me for many private contract jobs doing the same thing in the DC area. I could draw my pension while working the five years from 57 to 62 in the private sector. I'll have to do that math when the time comes, but I'd really like to retire at 57. Never know when you might keel over. I'm very jealous of time.

How much does the government put into your pension? Do they match anything in your TSP?

Since donated leave is pretty much a phenomenon only government entities do, I'll educate you a little here. Much like the Feds, Georgia is extremely generous with leave. To me, it's the best perk of the job. A brand new state of GA employee will earn over 6 weeks of paid leave (sick and annual) their first year on the job. That's pretty much unheard of...

As usual, with anything else, there are employees who take full advantage of it. We call those people "earn and burners". It's self explanatory...they are the ones who burn their time off as soon as they earn it. They make up 90% of the people who are begging for donated leave. When they are calling in and enjoying their time off, their co-workers are having to pull their load, so 95% of those people are marginal employees anyway.

Fuck. Them.

Nobody in State was furloughed?

I'm not worried about the furlough unless it goes past about four months, which it won't. I keep a robust rainy-day account for situations such as this. I'll replenish it with the backpay.

This is a sweet vacation. Hoping it goes until about mid-February.

The people getting screwed in this are the ones who have to work without pay, all 400,000 of them.

You will probably get back pay but I think the probability of that is a little lower than it's historically been in situations like this because you have a complete nut job in the White House and sycophant Republicans in Congress shilling for him.
