Or the Demoicans.

Liberals criticizing the ability of conservatives to handle money is like the Aryan Nation criticizing the KKK for being racist.

Neither one has a good track record but they both like to criticize the other and promise that it will be different when they get another chance but it never is. Why do we keep believing them?

Why won't Mitch McConnell allow remote voting by U.S. Senators?

Hey Geoff, if you post an article, you should probably read ALL the words first.
If passed, the bill would not immediately be enforceable, as the secure software needed by lawmakers to access much of their sensitive material is still being created.

Swalwell had introduced the MOBILE Resolution in every Congress since his first election in 2013 to no avail, but viewed the threat of coronavirus as relevant to his bill, saying that the crisis makes it necessary.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, also threw out the idea of voting from home, telling members during a closed Democratic Caucus meeting last week, “No.”

“To the extent that Pelosi shut it down, it’s shut down,” Democratic Caucus chairman Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told Roll Call.

A key part of legislative activities is debate and debating remotely is different and change is scary.

I'm guessing that leadership and K Street are also afraid that this is just the beginning and that eventually congresscritters will vote from home and won't need to come to Washington. They'll be a lot harder to influence and control if they're spread across the country.

We do it all the time on the committee meetings I am involved with. Is it ideal, no, but it can be done and done effectively. Granted most of what they do is posturing, so all they need is a suitable background and a scrip to read.....

You raise a good point, and I like that idea. Just another way to put hole in to help drain the swamp..... :D

You talk about boxcars full of money. You're old enough to remember how much Chrysler's first "bailout" from the government was.....

From US News & World Report:
It's much bigger than the Chrysler bailout of 1980. Back then, the government gave Chrysler a $1.5 billion loan guarantee to stave off a bankruptcy filing. That's equivalent to about $4 billion today—less than the amount each of the Detroit 3 is likely to get this time around.
Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. Two wrongs don't make a right. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. There's a million euphamisms that apply here....and none of them make the decision any more palatable. :? :? :?

So how are bailouts for airlines and other corporations markedly different from bailouts for student loans? Aren't you bailing out companies/people that made poor decisions and didn't plan for the future and thus rewarding those poor decisions and lack of planning?

They aren't different. It is the government picking winners, again.

Although if they bailed out student loans, I bet there would be an economic boom. The money spent on the loans would go back into the macro and micro economy. Savings rates would increase. People would be able to contribute that money to a down payment on a home. Or starting a business. If Delta folds, it would suck but the Airline Industry isn't a necessity. :twocents:

I'm talking about travel for leisure. It's a convenience. The air transportation of goods is a different thing. Frontier Airline isn't vital to the country.

If the competition is poorly managed (and focusing on short term, bonus enhancing results is poor management) that the government has to prop up, is it really competition?

How is bailing out a poorly managed airline that burned its cash reserves on a stock buyback to boost their EPS different from bailing out a Millennial who borrowed a $100K for a sociology degree? If we bail out one, shouldn't we bail out the other?

I'm with Alphie. Let them fail. It will hurt in the short term but another company will step in the fill the void and maybe their successors will learn from their mistakes and have a nest egg to survive a crisis.
