I certainly understand the counterpoints (as well as the utter hypocrisy and moral relativism of people like Joltin Joe) but the torture issue is a joke. We shouldn't be doing it and more important, we should be addressing the underlying causes of the terrorist attacks: our dependence on Middle East oil. As if torture will solve all our problems.
Typical conks = taking the easy, but in the long run - most destructive way out.

Quick question: How many people have the conks (and Joltin' Joe in particular, since you chose to name him by name) beheaded in their lives?
Nothin' like DRAMA, D. You don't agree with us....we get that. We REALLY get that....but comparing us to terrorists is just hyperbole at the highest levels.

Z, you kill people through your support of atrocities committed in the Middle East by the United States during the Bush Administration. An administration who's actions you blindly supported, and continue to support to this day, even with a glaring record of failure.AZGrizFan wrote:D1B wrote:SMFH at the conks and Joltin Joes of the world: violent killers, no better than and more dangerous than terrorists.

Z, killers like you need to be held accountable for your political beliefs, which can, and in your case - DO kill people.
Joe does the same through his blind support of the Catholic Church. He, like you in Iraq and Afghanistan, bears partial responsibility for the overpopulation of Africa and the resulting genocides and wars.

Not quite the quote I would expect from Nietzsche. Are you sure he said it? I googled it, and saw this quote attributed to him, but I also saw this quote, which sounds more like him: “Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?”
Anyway, quoting Nietzsche isn't going to win over a lot of people to your viewpoint. I thought quoting Nietzsche went out after the Third Reich.

Adolf Hitler was an admirer of Wagner's music and anti-Jewish sentiments and saw in Wagner's operas an embodiment of his own vision of the German nation. There continues to be debate about the extent to which Wagner's views might have influenced Nazi thinking. As with the works of Nietzsche, the Nazis used those parts of Wagner's thought that were useful for propaganda and ignored or suppressed the rest.

Hitler greatly admired Wagner while Nietzsche broke a close friendship with him and was a bitter rival to his death. One of many glaring differences between the two.Grizalltheway wrote:Hitler also admired Wagner, does that mean his music wasn't good?JoltinJoe wrote:

Personally, I'm not aware of a close connection between Nietzsche's philosophy and Hitler. Hitler was not very sophisticated and was a christian until his death. The Third Reich has much more to do with christianity than Nietzche. His view on the race come from two sources (both mentioned in Mein Kampf)
1. The bible and catholic anti=semitism
2. Gobeneux writings on the superiority of the aryan race
Faith and christianity mentioned in Mein Kampf = Hundreds of times
Nietzsche mentioned in Mein Kampf = 0

Joe, do you really want to get into this? The overwhelming consencus is the pope did not do enough. It is a fact that many prominent Jews praised the church for saving a few thousand people when the Hitler was on his knees, and dismissing the fact that 11 million were already killed on their watch, in order to get Vatica approval for the creation Jewish state.
Pope Pius allowed the mass extermination of millions of people to happen right on thier doorstep. Yet another shameful period of cowardess and inaction by the church.

There is a difference between and man's music and his thought. Wagner wrote sublime music, even though his personal thoughts were pretty reprehensible.Grizalltheway wrote:From wikipedia (because I know you love it so muchJoltinJoe wrote:

As with the works of Nietzsche, the Nazis used those parts of Wagner's thought that were useful for propaganda and ignored or suppressed the rest.
As for the observation that the Nazis used from Nietzsche those parts of his work "that were useful for propaganda and ignored or suppressed the rest," that claim is true but has to be taken in context. There has been some work underway in the past 30-40 years to try to clean-up Nietzsche's image (thus, the quote which started all this, which I suspected -- and found evidence to support -- is a translation which tries to clean-up a more accurate earlier translation), and trying to disassociate Nietzsche from the Third Reich is one goal of this movement.
Yes, I think the Nazis intentionally and selectively quoted Nietzsche, as they did with virtually everyone and everything they quoted. The main problem with Nietzsche, however, is that he never really expressed an overall consistent viewpoint with his writings, which made his writing particularly fertile ground for Nazi propagandists. While Nietzsche certainly would have been appalled by the way he was employed by the Nazis, there was something logical, in a second generation kind of way, about the manner that the Nazis read and applied Nietzsche.

Come on Joe. Where is this bond between Hitler and Nietzche?
If memory serves Nietzche was not particularly fond of anti semitism and as mentioned earlier (Wagner) was not fond of fanatic german nationalism.
