Over the last six weeks, President Trump has been spending political capital like a drunk at a casino who insists he’s got “a system.” If history is any predictor, his second term trajectory may already be set — right off a cliff, pedal to the floor.

Too soon to say that? Consider former President Joe Biden, who, in his first weeks in office, reversed Trump’s border policies and unleashed another flood of pandemic relief cash. These moves ultimately helped create his two biggest political headaches: a migrant crisis and runaway inflation so bad that even Dollar Tree had to raise its prices.

Then Biden made it worse by shrugging the problems off. Immigration, his administration argued, was “cyclical,” and inflation was merely “transitory.” Neither explanation turned out to be accurate. His approval ratings tanked immediately upon his disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal and never recovered.

Now it’s Trump’s turn to step on a rake. His approval ratings just went underwater, meaning he hit this particular milestone even faster than Biden. According to a new Ipsos poll, three in five Americans think the cost of living — you know, the issue that likely won Trump the 2024 election — is “going in the wrong direction.”

As you might recall, Trump promised to bring down food prices on day one. Well, here we are, and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins is telling the public to deal with high egg prices by raising their own chickens.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 1%, or over 400 points, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped nearly 2%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) plummeted more than 2.6%. The Nasdaq is now more than 10% off its December record high and officially entered into correction territory.

Trade-war uncertainty has persisted as investors weighed how far President Donald Trump would be willing to negotiate on tariffs. On Thursday, Trump said he would pause tariffs on some Mexican goods, and the White House later said the delay also includes goods from Canada.

US employers cut more jobs last month than any February since 2009

US-based employers last month announced plans to slash 172,017 jobs, a 103% increase from a year ago and the highest February total since 2009, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas’s latest monthly job cuts report released Thursday.

It’s the 12th highest monthly total in the 32 years Challenger has been tracking job cuts. The 11 others (four came during the Covid-19 pandemic) all occurred when the US was in a recession, Challenger data shows.

Anyone with basic training in economics can tell you that kneejerk tariffs (and that's what these have been) are a bad idea. trump should have paid better attention at Wharton.

"Going into this year, I believed the S&P's 2025 upside was about +5% (not intended to be precise!), and the downside was between -10% and -15%," said Kass in a post in his diary on TheStreet Pro on Friday. "The move towards the higher end of my year's forecast earlier this week substantially eroded the reward/risk ratio (even further) to virtually zero upside and 15%+ downside."

Veteran fund manager who correctly forecast S&P 500's drop revamps outlook

Kass expects short-term relief rallies, such as the strong intraday rally witnessed on Tuesday afternoon, but he says those rallies will fail and stocks will wind up with lower highs and lows.

"I do not expect the recovery in stocks (seen in the last 12 hours) to be long-lasting or the start of another leg in the bull market that we have witnessed over the last two years," said Kass. "I believe the market is on a path for a 10-15% decline this year."

The reasons cited for his downbeat view: slugflation (sticky inflation and low GDP growth), the Fed's pause on interest rate cuts, stock valuation (the S&P 500's forward price-to-earnings multiple entered this week above 21, higher than the 10-year average of 18), and the tariffs.

Definitely a buying opportunity coming. I felt the same way as Kass about the potential market upside vs. downside in 2025 and I knew it would rile the market if trump went through with his tariff threats so I liquidated 95% of my retirement investments on January 17, 2025 (I kept my investment in GLD ETF and that's done well through the uncertainty). I plan to buy back in when I think the market is near bottom.
