Because of the shutdown, our dental and vision insurance is not being paid, so if we want to continue it, we have to write a check to our insurance company for the full amount, which is about four times our normal premium. OPM is still deliberating about our regular health insurance. It may fall under the same guidance.

Any resolution to the shutdown should include mechanisms to ensure that politicians can't shut down the government like this again. It makes no sense that this can and has happened multiple times across decades. I won't hold my breath that politicians will want to do that, as politicians on both sides appear to be plenty content that this kind of situation can and does arise - all the better to score political points with apparently. But it should be something that gets passed as soon as this shutdown finally ends.
