Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious or if I'm way off base... I'm trying to stay out of this discussion as much as I can... but this is about the 1st Amendment and a persons right to freedom of speech without having to worry about their company being boycotted?

Partially, but it has nothing to do about being boycotted. It was a statement to the mayors of Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco who threatened to ban Chick-fil-A from their cities for exercising their 1st amendment right.

Gotcha and I agree with that. Wasn't sure if this was about the boycott as I've seen a bunch of people raging on "the facebook" about how stupid "Libs" are for boycotting... which is pretty hypocritical IMO.


Just a thought, I think all this did was nationally highlight Chick Fil A's religious stance as a company. If you were unaware of their religious stance before this, then you either (A) Live under a rock and can't connect that if a place closes on Sunday, it's usually for a pretty specific reason, especially for Southern companies. Generally, that reason doesn't coalesce with LGBT rights. (B) You've never heard of Chick Fil A or don't have one in your town.

I don't see what it would do. CFL will just take their business elsewhere. I'm sure NYC could easily deny a license, maybe Boston and Chicago should seek assistance from NYC.

We're getting out of China because China is starting to build a middle class...so everyone is moving to cheaper labor markets...or trying to build a niche market to well-off feel goody people who are "environmentally conscious"...at least in a few select sections of their bubble world.

Demographics of your customers, and volume...compared to Walmart. Then talk about "trends".

The only trend is that manufacturers are still trying to find the lowest supply prices and labor prices that fit their niche. The "trend" to anything else is a small blip on the stat sheet that makes a few people feel good. Of course, YT is poor, therfore he will have to avoid buying expensive dresses and live with, and probably hate, himself because each day he gets dressed in his low cost clothes he is contributing to keeping people as wage slaves.

Oh, go tell you wife to imediately start paying 20% more for her supplies...just to make sure her line of suppliers are able to pay their suppliers a better wage next year...and increase her labor costs by 10% each year...after all, her employees, who are making her successful, should deserve to have something to look forward to instead of 2-3% raises that barely keep up with inflation.

Oh, and keep the price of the garment the same. Might as well let the customers keep some of their hard earned money to feed their families (unless you just sell to women that don't believe in having families...start the boycott ). Damn capitalist pig!

I wonder why I'd be defensive since you attack everything or come off as you know more about a persons business than they do.

1) Of course China is building a middle class, the unionization and higher wages are factors that are driving manufacturing out. Labor costs have jumped 30% in China. They are no more the cheap manufacturing hub as they once were. Vietnam, for instance, is expecting significant growth. A Japanese corporation is put billions into Vietnam to provide manufacturing. But i've already stated that.

2) The demographics aren't Wal-Mart customer. It's more like Anthropologie, Edun, ModCloth, etc... In fact, she recently completed a survey where her average customer is a Married woman, with a Bachelors, making $60-$80k who owns her home, enjoys antique shopping, considers herself "eco-friendly" and "trendy" and resides in the NorthWest, Northeast and SouthEast. Age range is 25-43. Secondary market are the 18-25 college kids. I can supply you with percentages if you care. I doubt it.

3) YT may be poor, but if he's shopping at my wifes store, he has some issues that I think would worry his parents.

4) 20% more for supplies? And where is your in depth analysis to support this or is this just some arbitrary number? We have contracts that define costs including fee's and such. However, we'll review the market and economy when we renew in 2014.

See, we've built up an amazing relationship with those that source and manufacture. She does/has done effective forecasting and keeping low overhead has afforded her to at least stay ahead of the game and save for the future. We never know what the future holds, or how much inflation will affect the bottom line, however we can forecast and try to minimize the impact by improving sales and shifting our focus to areas that our customers have voiced their opinions on. (of course, our repeat customers have given us 1 or 2 ideas which have been excellent)

5) Her employees? I don't need a 2.3% raise. In fact, I don't take a salary(technically she gets a salary). She's the only real employee and being that we have sources of income outside of the business, she only pulls a little bit. Everything else gets reinvested into the company.

40% markup is dangerously low to even being able to turn a profit. Considering the big stores mark up their goods 100% at the least. But, like good business owners, we studied the market, our competitors and our prices reflect that. Of course, they could change, nothing is set in stone. But keeping the prices low while still turning a small profit is important. We have a specific goal in mind and so far, so good.

Btw, market surveys and trends show that the "yo uhave to be wealthy to afford eco friendly goods" is slowly fading. The green fashion market is budding and more and more people have access to it. It'll be niche, but it's gaining some traction in the mainstream fashion world.
