Unfortunately, greed isn't limited to capitalism. At this point in our evolutionary cycle, it's endemic to the human race. Every system is going to be at risk to those whose greed for wealth or power & control will drive them to positions of authority where they will line their pockets and bully those without power. Do you think that most Soviet bureaucrats were true believers in communist ideals or did their greed and ambition drive them to those levels? The American capitalist model has been more successful because it has done a better job of regulating and focusing that greed and ambition without reducing the drive too much. It might not be perfect but it has worked and I would like to know what the alternative is or will be.
Capitalism works better than any other system...it does need controls...the fewer the better...

Our recent problems is that on the pendulum of government, we went too far on removing controls...now the current administration wants to go too far in instituting controls...

It's a balancing act...

Although a very good case could be made that Cuba in 2009 is in better shape overall than Cuba in 1959.
give my a break every communist state is a dictatorship so what was your point. tell cubans that are coming to our country that thier country is better off
NO - in true communism, the state withers and dies - which, ironically, seems to be the goal of half the board.

The Cubans that fled for the most part were the 10% that were holding the other 90% in virtual slavery. Slavery ended officially in Cuba in 1886, reallistically it ended after the Revolution.

The vast disparities in wealth in Cuba is what CAUSED the revolution -something that seems to be lost on those that cry that the wealthy are taxed too heavily, all the while the income concentration is expanding here.

If you study history, you should know that wealth ALWAYS gets redistributed, the only option is whether you lose it all (including possibily your head) or you lose 40-50% and still have a damn good life.

That's a tall order for some in this group.

IF it tanks...which it never has...

It's come close (1929 - 1940 for example)...where unemloyment topped at about 25 - 30%...

This current event isn't even as bad as the 1979 - 1981 recession...we don't have double digit inflation and interest rates...

Well, I'd never say that...

But for the sake of the conversation, show me one thing the government has run successfully and made a profit....

I don't want my government to run a company to make a profit - only to break even - like many local utilities do.

And I am not sure what that has to do with anything. I am not in favor of nationalizing businesses...

Just like investors are there to take the loss when a company declines...what's your point???

Breaking even is a great concept...if you don't have investors...and if you build in money to upgrade/recapitalize equipment and give pay raises...stuff like that...

And NO company loses ever should be put onto the taxpayers...I don't support the bailouts...let the strong survive and weak fail...

So, just what are we discussing.... :?:
