"The Brexit contagion: How France, Italy and the Netherlands now want their referendum too

Voters in France, Italy and the Netherlands are demanding their own votes on European Union membership and the euro, as the continent faces a “contagion” of referendums.

EU leaders fear a string of copycat polls could tear the organisation apart, as leaders come under pressure to emulate David Cameron and hold votes....."

Good. The EU has just been set up poorly. They need to scrap it entirely and start anew..

I think the Brexit is unfortunate, especially for Gen X and Millennials who overwhelmingly voted to stay in the EU. Honestly, and I'm honestly not trying to make this a generational thing, but I think the older folks are romanticizing a bygone era where everyone is solely dependent on themselves.

I really hope as Boomers and older folks die, Gen X/Millenials will create an even more open world...one that mirrors the way we've grown up interconnected to each other. More open borders, more immigration, more information sharing, and just more connected to each other in general. We've created a world where we're becoming reliant on each other...and there's nothing particularly bad about it. While there's drawbacks, the benefits have been enormous. Those that can't accept a changing world (whether socially or economically) are the ones which get left behind...and then bitch about how they've been left behind.

This…this right here is why America is fucked. Stupid millennial “we are the world” and other kumbayaa BS group think. You know what openness has gotten Europe? A title wave of your people going in and taking advantage of their socialist way of life and shitting all over “new age” thinking with their stone age mentality/religion…all caused by hilldog’s failed foreign policy…that same person you are supporting.

BTW good on the Brits for waking up to the sham that the EU is. Europe is now another step closer to full implosion. 8-)

Also saw a headline of Trump taking a dig at Obama as he was a "remain" supporter.

I'm having trouble determining if this post was real or a troll post. I can tell it's from someone's parent's basement, what with the "becoming reliant on each other" thing, but other than that I'm flummoxed.

There is nothing wrong with more integration and cooperation, but there comes a point where you have too much heterogeneity in a society under one government and things don't work. See Iraq. There's probably no way in heck they're going to be able to get all of those groups to cooperate under one democratic government. Too much diversity is not a strength no matter how many rainbow-colored posters people put up saying so.

A lot of the Arabs entering Europe will assimilate and contribute. No doubt about that. But many of them bring a third-world mentality with them and them and their kids will vote in national elections. You think the Christian right in America is dangerous? How would you like a lot of poorly-educated Muslims from developing countries voting on social issues and abortion and things like that?

Like I said, there is a large potential downside to multiculturalism that liberals (especially in America) want to turn a blind eye to as long as immigrants mostly give loyalty to the democrat party.

And don't make the mistake of assuming the gap is a generation thing instead of an age thing. Once upon a time the baby boomers were the young liberal people who knew the solution to the world's problems, and now they're the ones Oprah Wifnrey says needs to hurry up and die off.

:ohno: There has been no call for the UK to exit the EU, close it's borders and hide behind its doors. Honestly, the fear mongering about them becoming Isolationists is unfounded. This is about what's best for the UK. I seriously doubt the UK is going to close it's borders and imposes high barriers to entry for investment and trade agreements. That just doesn't make sense. The UK is going to take control of its immigration policy, its tax policy, its economy, etc.. The UN still stands (so there's the still the body that has contributed to a peaceful world) and there aren't any signs of them wanting to leave that.

The UK has existed for 309 years and it's member countries for much longer. They'll manage. They aren't going to suddenly dry up and go away.

The coming years might be tough but anytime a people want self-determination, who are we to say it's bad?

As to the generations...look at who set up the EU, joined the EU, have prospered and failed for longer within the EU. It's not the Generations X, Y or Z. Their points of view shouldn't be discounted. If this reversal does fail, then what's to stop the up and coming generations from recreating another EU-like body?

Also, where is this idea that the EU was the epitome of a governing body?

That last point should be bolded. I've said on here I prefer larger groups as opposed to smaller, splintered groups, as a general rule. But that doesn't mean you just throw a blanket over anything bigger and say it's better. The EU has always had some huge, gaping flaws. If this leads to a better EU, or something better down the road, so be it. Status quo for the EU was not something to desperately hold on to.

2,000 banking jobs already gone from London - moving to Dublin and Frankfort.

The areas that voted most heavily are the areas that will be most hurt. Jeez - just like Trump fans here. Fucking dumbasses.

The more educated you are, the more likely the remain vote. Just like Trump voters - the dumber you are, the more likely you are to be a Trump Voter (see BDKJMU). Trump/Brexit voters - Dumb and Racists.

Don't know about that, but pretty much every economist in the world agrees that this will be bad for the UK's economy, at least in the short and medium term.

Yeah, and IIRC, people from the Leave campaign said that's to be expected.

Honestly, there's no point in going off the deep end today. Or next week. Let the markets react.

If this fails, which I hope not, then it fails. But at least the country is going to TRY and change its course. Fundamentally, I don't see the problem.

Short term pain for long term gain.

This will allow the UK to foster it's own partnerships and broker it's own trade deals. Long term, you can bet that the UK will leave continental Europe far behind when all is said and done.

Yeah, this won't be the end of the world at all, no matter what our leaders have said. The EU is just a mess as it's currently configured and if this is the kick in the pants they need to fix it or just scrap it altogether and start over then that's a good thing. And if they don't fix it and the EU continues to dissolve better for the UK to get out now.

Hard to tell what Scotland will do. It's good if they wait 1-2 years before voting again, gives them a chance to see how things go in the EU and if they really want to be joining that sinking ship. Without the UK there to counterbalance the German/French impulses I'm not sure that Scotland will want to join that in two years. I know they really don't care for the English, but staying with them may be the best of two evils for them.

I'm not a fan of nationalism for nationalism sake - I think we are better off joined than as entirely separate entities. However, it has to be done right and the EU was a good example of how not to bring different countries together.
There are calls in France, Italy and the Netherlands to vote for exit. They see this vote as proof that the EU is failing and crumbling. Scotland has already said they were going to prepare the legislation necessary to leave the UK.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06 ... -sinn-fei/
Nicola Sturgeon has thrown the future of the United Kingdom into doubt by saying a second independence referendum is “highly likely” in the next two-and-a-half years following UK’s vote to leave the EU.

The Scottish First Minister claimed in 2014, before Scotland voted to stay in the Union, that it was a once in a lifetime event, but claimed following the shock Brexit vote that it could happen again by the end of 2018, before the UK leaves Europe.

She claimed in a press conference at Bute House, her official residence in Edinburgh, where she was flanked by the Saltire and the EU flag, that it was "democratically unacceptable" for Scotland to be taken out of the EU against its will.

Ms Sturgeon said large numbers of people who voted No in the independence referendum just 21 months ago had been in touch with her to say they would now vote Yes.

She also recalled that in 2014, voters were told by the Better Together campaign that the best way to ensure they remained in the EU was to stay in the UK.
Ireland is already preparing plans for border control. The Brits have a LOT of work ahead of them and there's going to be some struggles.
There has to be a Monty Python sketch in here somewhere.
