The Dems will end up having as much success with this as they did with Russia hoax.

Worst case - it will be a great study of what a President can get away with as far as abuse of power
We're testing the power of the position - if we find it totally okay for this behavior

Then the future will get very interesting for political opponents of any sitting president

as long as they don't fuck up the economy I don't really care how this plays out

I think it's further along than that. I think between this and the Russia-Red-Scare thing, they have really publicized how seedy and devil-may-care the whole political campaigning thing has been. I think the public has always assumed there's a level of grayness when it has come to how political campaigns have been run before in terms of, for lack of a better word, morality (maybe fairness, maybe legal vs illegal), especially when it came to attacking your opponent. But the past 4 years of political drama, with primarily each party focused on bringing down the other party, has put on full display to the non-partisans of us out there how laser focused each party really is on just winning. Not governing. Not imparting some vision on where we should be heading as a country. Just on winning. And by winning I mean loser-shaming the other side. And I get it, there's a lot of power and perks that come with winning political elections, and maybe it's because the media has become more partisan over time as well (Fox used to be the outlier when it came to partisan hype and focus, now they have competition for that with CNN and MSNBC among others) that it just seems to be like a megaphone each day from each side. You keep thinking each day that the public couldn't have lower faith and confidence in government but then they one-up it almost every news cycle. The future is interesting, but just because you wonder how much worse it can get. And I'm an optimist. :coffee:

In what sense will the GOP "die"?

I mean, as things stand now Joe Biden will probably boat-race Trump, but if Bernie or Lizzie somehow win then you've got yourself a ball game again.

Either way, the GOP will get it's pulse and strength back in spades whenever donks try to push the pendulum too far the other way (and they will).
The trendy thing to say when a party fucks itself is to call it dead...
But ideas don't die that easily

the pendulum keeps swinging like it always has
“The GOP is dead” - it could happen

“Conservatism is dead” - one of the most idiotic statements ever on this board

I think it’s more accurate to say the GOP has evolved.

Actually I think the delineation between the populist, religious, and classical conservative factions of the GOP are more visible today than they have ever been

I’ve never been more castigated by other “conservatives” more than I have in the last 9-10 years. And I haven’t evolved or changed very much on core principles in that time

I think the time is right for a centrist, libertarian leaning 3rd party. I think it could easily peel off 30% of both parties at this point in time

I would love that. But politics is an industry and they won’t let competitors in.

Thinking out loud, here:

Could it be politically advantageous for the senate GOP to kick Trump to the curb if he's impeached?

If you remove Trump and the donks nominate Burnie or Lizzie, then all the people pissed off about Trump being ousted will come out to vote against the Donk. They won't show up if he's running against Biden, but that may not matter because Trump isn't beating Biden anyways.

And what if Mike Pence says "I'll serve the rest of the term, but I didn't sign up for this schit to run a campaign for president". Can Republicans hold a crash nomination process for a new candidate?

Naw those folks just won't show up to vote. If the GOP held Senate impeaches Trump based on the nothingburgers we have so far, the GOP can kiss the Senate good-bye.

Maybe the Republicans shouldn’t have canceled some state primaries. But I think the GOP could put something together. It’s success is probably nil but they can get someone.

And I would hope it isnt Pence. That guy scares me more than Trump.

Trump is just one POTUS, in a long line of Presidents, that’s have certainly abused their power in some fashion.

Try me. We mostly agree on immigration. I'm all for slicing spending, decreasing the size of government. We don't have a revenue problem.

I'm for legal weed, same sex marriage and abortion. But don't expect me to call you "they" or give two shits about which pronoun you prefer to be called.

I think it's an awful practice and should have tight limitations. It should be a rarity. It should only be done early in the pregnancy or if you have to save the mother. But for some people, that's an option and it should be a safe as possible. :twocents:

It's a tough thing to defend, I know.
