Re: Coronavirus
Not a big deal in the US, really. Not yet, anyway.
Its a bit of a panic in Asia but mostly in a political sense. I’m in another Asian country now helping deal with some of the political consequences as we speak
Part of the issue right now is over a lack of understanding about the virus itself - incubation period, effectiveness of testing, and virulence/transmissibility

Re: Coronavirus
The dumbest thing I've seen is they quarantined these people on the ship for 2 weeks, and then decide to fly the 400 or whatever Americans, including the 14 infected, to the US and quarantine them for another 2 weeks. May as well have flown them to the US 2 weeks ago and started a real quarantine then. On that ship it just kept spreading and spreading- 370 some people apparently as of last count.

Re: Coronavirus
I'd guesstimate 30-40% of the passengers in Doha airport were wearing masks. A group of Chinese travelers (all wearing masks) were walking together and it was like a parting of the Red Sea as they walked through the airport. Kinda felt bad for them.
I get it though, it's a new virus and people fear the unknown, but so far this thing is far less deadly than the flu. FFS, we have people around the world thinking the flu shot causes autism and probably doing worse damage than this thing...so not gonna fear a virus that's only infected an extremely small percentage of the Chinese population.
If the virus is part of our new reality, it is what it is. I'm sure in time a vaccine or seasonal shot will be developed.

Agreed on an eventual vaccine- but where do you get that it is less deadly than the flu? I just spent a long weekend in a crash course on the virus with advice directly from CDC and that is not what we are getting.∞∞∞ wrote:I'd guesstimate 30-40% of the passengers in Doha airport were wearing masks. Honestly, I'm more afraid of anti-vaxxers than the coronavirus. Considering the amount of people it's infected and the actual population of China (or even Wuhan), doesn't seem like too big of a deal...but of course we should take steps to contain it.
Just seems like the newness of it has triggered people's fears, which again is understandable.

I get that we aren’t immunologists but your logic is a simple failure of mathematics and has nothing to do with the lethality of COVID-19

Re: Coronavirus
That's fair, but how lethal is it beyond China? From what I read it's been about twice as deadly as the flu in China, but significantly less deadly elsewhere in the world. I'm sure there's plenty of variables at play though.CID1990 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 4:20 pmIsn’t the flu already in every corner of the world and has infected millions of people?∞∞∞ wrote: Hasn't the flu killed far more people this year?

In the end, I trust the scientists and medical professionals will do their best.
edit: just doing the quick math based on the latest numbers, seems like 0.6% of non-Chinese that were infected have passed away (5/894), while 2.6% of Chinese people infected have died (1863/72363)

Coronavirus
Those numbers are about right - but we need another couple weeks when the sample size will be significantly larger. Also, a mitigating factor is the availability of state of the art medical care available in mire developed countries. We have access to membrane blood oxygenators which can help people survive the killing aspect of this virus- the respiratory lesions that lead to pneumonia and organ failure.∞∞∞ wrote:That's fair, but how lethal is it beyond China? All of this, though, has little to do with the lethality of the virus itself

If the virus is part of our new reality, it is what it is. I'm sure in time a vaccine or seasonal shot will be developed. This has already been debunked. You're probably going off the seasonal mortality percentage and not the actual rates. Millions infected. 10s of 1000s die each season. As a percentage of the infected population, yeah it's low. But in overall deaths, the flu has been killing for centuries. Where was this virus last year or the year before?

1-in-50 Corona virus contractions dies
So... you might want to check your math
I believe flu deaths are about 1-in-1,000

Re: Coronavirus
I think the 1 in 50 thing is probably wrong because it appears that there are a lot of asymptomatic infections. In other words, I think it's likely that the total number of infections is being dramatically undercounted right now. Whether counting all of the infections would get it down to 1 in 1,000 is something we'll have to see.Chizzang wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 5:44 pmCorona has a 2% mortality rate...Ibanez wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 1:50 pm

In any case, I think the safe bet is that the various strains of influenza combined will kill a lot more people this year than this coronavirus does. Even if the death rate is lower the infection rate is just so much higher. At this point in the United States alone we've had an estimated 14.000 people die from he flu during the 2019-2020 flu season.
