UNI88 wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 10:10 am au contraire, try and bury it in bullshit and FAKE NEWS all you want but using Signal to communicate confidential information is similar to using a private email server.
It was text messaging on an encrypted app. Its not even a news story
Trump administration’s use of disappearing Signal messages to discuss military strikes not allowed under record law, experts say
In a 2023 memo, the Defense Department defined unmanaged apps, which also included platforms like WhatsApp and Apple iMessage, as those "NOT authorized to access, transmit, or process non-public DoD information."

Instead, the U.S. government requires officials to use approved classified communication systems, such as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), to discuss secret data.

In his report, Goldberg also said that some of the messages in the group chat utilized Signal's "disappearing messages" function, with some set to delete after one week and others after four weeks.

This has prompted concerns about potential violations of public records law by the U.S. officials.

One former government security leader, who asked for anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, told Fortune that all of the officials involved in the Signal group would have been required to preserve their communications under record laws.

The person added that none of the officials involved in the group chat had the authority to decide which of their communications did and didn't apply to public record laws.
2 issues with use of Signal app:
1) It isn't approved by the DoD to access, transmit, or process non-public DoD information.
2) Use of disappearing messaging is likely a violation of public records law.

Pretty similar stuff to what Hildamort was justifiably accused of.

They weren't on telephone call.

If it was typed or voice to texted then it needs to be saved. Using Signal's disappearing function to avoid that requirement is shady just like Hildamort's use of a private email server.

Cry me a river. Nat Parks (for the most part no hunting) still has park rangers to enforce park rules.

National Forests/National Grasslands (hunting & fishing) has their own LEOs/game wardens (US Forest Service/Dept of Agriculture) to enforce nat forest rules.

BLM has their own LEOs..
I’ve extensively hunted and fished BLM and other public lands my whole life and I’ve encountered exactly one BLM ranger.

Habitat protection, wildland fire suppression, elementary school field trips, EWU biology grad student field research and facilities including unique and important ecosystem research all take place 5 miles from my house at Turnbull NWR.

Show me where enforcement and all of the above will not be affected by staffing and funding cuts.

These agencies were underfunded to begin with. You’re over your skis on this one bub.
LEOS/rangers/wardens aren’t being cut. I‘ve spent a couple hundred days fishing over the years in New England, NY, VA, and FL (where license required). I‘ve encountered I FL FWC officer (last year)

How many of those RIFed were primarily admin/office types vs primarily in the field?

Yahoo News/YouGov poll: Fewer than 1 in 5 Americans agree with Trump about annexing Greenland, Canada
Asked by Yahoo News and YouGov whether they would “favor or oppose America annexing Greenland,” a mere 19% of respondents say they would favor the move.

The number who would favor “Canada becoming America’s 51st state” is even lower, at just 17%.

On the flip side, roughly half of Americans oppose annexing Greenland (49%), and a clear majority oppose acquiring Canada (57%). Another third or so — 26% for Canada, 32% for Greenland — say they’re not sure what to think.
His constituents have spoken. Isn't trump supposed to be doing their will?

European universities offer ‘scientific asylum’ to US researchers fleeing Trump’s cuts
“We see it as our duty to come to the aid of our American colleagues,” said Jan Danckaert, the rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in explaining why his university – founded in 1834 to safeguard academia from the interference of church or state – had decided to open 12 postdoctoral positions for international researchers, with a particular focus on Americans.

“American universities and their researchers are the biggest victims of this political and ideological interference,” Danckaert said in a statement. “They’re seeing millions in research funding disappear for ideological reasons.”
Is this the start of a brain drain that will have long lasting implications on American research, development, innovation, thought leadership, and ultimately competitiveness?

The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month, blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging in to their online accounts because the servers were overloaded. In the field, office managers have resorted to answering phones at the front desk as receptionists because so many employees have been pushed out. But the agency no longer has a system to monitor customers’ experience with these services, because that office was eliminated as part of the cost-cutting efforts led by Elon Musk.

And the phones keep ringing. And ringing.

Social Security is the primary source of income for about 40 percent of older Americans.
That’s a big number.

It massively reduced elder poverty rates and has kept seniors in their homes and splurging on Granny’s Buffet on a regular basis.

I’m not sure middle class people are prepared to have their parents spend the last 20 years of their life living with them.

Or, if Medicare gets cut, leaving their careers to become a full time untrained care giver.

I’m not happy about the current state of politics and the destruction of our institutions. However, I’m optimistic and grateful for all that I’vd been given by life and all that I have. I’m empathetic for people who struggle and unduly suffer.

Trump signs order seeking to overhaul US elections, including requiring proof of citizenship
President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive action to overhaul elections in the U.S., including requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and demanding that all ballots be received by Election Day.
...
Trump's order is likely to face legal challenges, given that the Constitution gives authority over elections to the states. While Congress has the power to regulate voting — and has done so to pass such laws as the Voting Rights Act — the Constitution makes clear that states have primary authority to set the “times, places and manner” for elections.
It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in the courts. He's got a shot at requiring proof of citizenship but as stated "states have primary authority to set the times, places and manner for elections".

The Constitution gives Congress, not the President the power to regulate voting. Will an executive order meet court approval or does he need an act of Congress?

No. But you don‘t need a bloated administrative state to do all that. The Fed govt (many states too) have too many

Nice dodge. I didn’t say they’d been fired.

Define bloat.

What’s the right sized government for a state of 8 million people with an abundance of federal lands and dams, 3 national parks, massive international shipping ports, Hanford, etc.

Now do the same on a national level.

Be thorough and show your work. It’s your assertion.

Otherwise you’re defending anarchism (the bad kind) and feudalism.
