NEW YORK (Reuters) - Donald Trump's support has surged and he is now running nearly even with Democrat Hillary Clinton among likely U.S. voters, a dramatic turnaround since he became the Republican party's presumptive presidential nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday.
The results could signal a close fight between the two likely White House rivals as Americans make up their minds ahead of the Nov. 8 election to succeed Democratic President Barack Obama. As recently as last week, Clinton led Trump by around 13 points in the poll.
He's a reality TV star in a political spectrum that has become reality tv - he's perfectly positioned to excel in that kind of political environment. No one really saw that coming when he started running, but it's clear it's turned in his favor. Anderson Cooper keeps bringing up how media accessible Trump is versus the other candidates - Trump has a big advantage in the media game at this point.93henfan wrote:Here comes The Donald!!! That's where Hillary can't get a lot of mileage out of this. Everyone already knows Trump is probably relatively shady when it comes to income, but although he gets audited all the time, I don't think he's ever been indicted over tax fraud or anything as such (could've been, I just don't know of it). Meanwhile, if Hillary or her supporters go down that path, the inevitable questions will come up concerning her holding back on transcripts from her Goldman Sachs speeches, questions surrounding the thousands of e-mails mysteriously deleted from her private server that she's still under investigation for, among other things. Trump can play not showing his taxes into an advantage, no one likes taxes anyway, and like other things Trump, that's superficial enough to work with the electorate. It's a losing strategy for Clinton to go down that path.93henfan wrote:Latest media-generated Trumptroversy: refusal to release tax returns.
So, it's not a constitutional mandate, but it has been done with regularity since Gerald Ford.
Trump's official line is that he's currently being audited and his tax counsel advises him not to release. Meanwhile, the IRS has said he can go ahead and release them, no biggie.
Here's why I think Trump doesn't want to release them: 1. He's a billionaire businessman. He doesn't want to lose any leverage in his next loan or negotiation because of his tax returns. 2. I bet he doesn't give a cent to charity.![]()
Also, if the media is so up in arms about this, why aren't they up in arms about Hillary's refusal to release transcripts of her millions of dollars worth of speeches to Goldman Sachs? Huh?
I think there is another reason which really speaks more to his braggadocios personality. While worth a whole lot ( in the billions) the return might hint that he isn't worth the $10billion he claims.93henfan wrote:Here's why I think Trump doesn't want to release them: 1. I’m loving the irony in this. Trump is and will continue to slaughter hilldog in the media because of this. Also hilldog is afraid to field questions, I mean did you see her get slaughtered by that hillbilly coal miner in West Va?GannonFan wrote:He's a reality TV star in a political spectrum that has become reality tv - he's perfectly positioned to excel in that kind of political environment. I don't doubt that at all, I'm sure he's not worth as much as he says. Even more reason why we'll probably never see his tax returns, but it still won't really matter with the electorate.OL FU wrote:I think there is another reason which really speaks more to his braggadocios personality. The only one it will matter with is Trump. Hillbilly: “You said you plan to force a lot of coal miners out of a job. I’m a coal miner that lost my job, here is my family. These are the people you are impacting, how are you going to me support my family and others in my situation?”
Hilldog: “Err…uh…what I said was taken out of context..err..ahh…big government will now help you…”
hilldog is going to get absolutely slaughtered when she is forced to be more engaging with the media and general populace (she can still avoid them though, especially after he embarrassing interaction with that hillbilly coal miner). Either way you look at it I don’t see how this goes well for her.![]()
Therein lies the rub. The more people will talk about hilldog, the more obvious it will become of the pending disaster she brings with her. Oh the irony...GannonFan wrote:It's just amazing, though, to see how Trump's persona is just suffocating when it comes to news coverage, and that his opponents may have or still do underestimate it's impact. There's a Trump news story pretty much everywhere. On election nights the Dems get maybe 1/10 of the talking time that Trump and the Trump phenomenon are getting. Trump and what Trump is doing seem to be on the news everyday, while I haven't heard anything about Clinton or Sanders since the latter winning the WVa primary and the former being taken to task for telling coal miners that she's going to unemploy them. Heck, even Elizabeth Warren is exclusively talking about Trump now, and going all Marco Rubio in her social media responses to Trump. Even in Cannes we have George Clooney talking about Trump. I have to think this is the wrong strategy to go with. The more we are saturated with Trump, the easier it is to move past the goofs, misstatements, and wrong moves he does make. It's just a question of volume, and any mistakes he makes are simply swallowed up by the huge amount Trump coverage that follows it. Just like he did in the GOP debates, he has a way to suck the air out of the room for anyone competing against him, to their detriment. I have to think the Dems and their surrogates would be much better placed talking up their candidate rather than continually bringing Trump stories to the press. The more media Trump gets the better he does. It's his lifeblood, and they seem to be feeding into it.
Exactly! That has to be the real reason.OL FU wrote:The only one it will matter with is Trump. Someone says he isn't worth $10B and he will spend the next week tweeting about how stupid that person is.GannonFan wrote:

$10B, $1B...does it matter? The man can finance the majority of his campaign out of his pocket. That's some serious cash.OL FU wrote:The only one it will matter with is Trump. Someone says he isn't worth $10B and he will spend the next week tweeting about how stupid that person is.GannonFan wrote:

Trump is backsliding on that "self-funding" thing now, as well.Ibanez wrote:$10B, $1B...does it matter? The man can finance the majority of his campaign out of his pocket. That's some serious cash.OL FU wrote:

That reason is twofold. the first is that a Presidential campaign is a fuck ton expensive.Ivytalk wrote:Trump is backsliding on that "self-funding" thing now, as well.Ibanez wrote:

It's an on line poll. Also, do you really think that last week Clinton had a 13 percentage point lead and this week she has a one point lead?93henfan wrote:Here comes The Donald!!! Make America great again!![]()

I'm guessing he'll pivot left in attempt to win independents...JohnStOnge wrote:I'm interested in seeing if Trump is going to try to "pivot" to being "more Presidential" in the general election. He was in a Republican Primary in which he would have had NO chance if he'd tried to actually debate people on substance. He won it by turning it into a clown show.
So is he now going to try to start debating somebody on substance? If he does Clinton will kill him.
I just don't see it happening. I see him going with the same clown show approach he used during the Republican Primary.
The question is: Will it work with the general electorate?
