LOL! Maybe so. But realize that a lot more Americans have been killed by food borne disease than have been killed by terrorists. It's not a sexy topic. But Americans take a reasonably safe food supply for granted. And the mechanisms that ensure that are compromised by a partial shutdown like this.
Nobody cares. Really.
I know I don't and the democrats definitely don't or they would fund infrastructure and build the wall

I was actually listening to it as I was driving back to the office after field work. Limbaugh was talking about how if Trump didn't dig in his heels he'd be violating a promise.

And I was thinking as I was listening that the PROMISE was to have a wall PAID FOR BY MEXICO. That is NOT consistent with having a partial shutdown because the US Congress won't appropriate funds for a wall.

Limbaugh also appeared to be under the false impression that the majority of Americans favor the wall thing. They do not. Also, an overwhelming majority oppose having a partial shutdown over the wall thing.

Junkies are notorious liars, John.

What percentage of your salary will your pension be?
If I retire at my minimum retirement age of 57, the formula is .01 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x years of service. If I wait until 62, the .01 in the above formula becomes .011.

So: At 57, I'll have 33 years of service. So that's .01 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x 33. My pension would be 33% of my high three.

If I work until 62, the formula would be .011 x (avg of highest three years of salary) x 38. My pension would be 41.8% of my high three.

My retirement will consist of the previously mentioned 33-41.8% pension, my Thrift Saving Plan (TSP, what our 401K is called)) payouts, and Social Security. I'm hoping my TSP matures to a level that I actually make more money per year in retirement than I do working.

I also have to weight the pros/cons of retiring at 57 versus 62. My federal job qualifies me for many private contract jobs doing the same thing in the DC area. I could draw my pension while working the five years from 57 to 62 in the private sector. I'll have to do that math when the time comes, but I'd really like to retire at 57. Never know when you might keel over. I'm very jealous of time.
I know several people that have done that in the past year-and-a-half. All but one in good to excellent shape for their age.

Next door neighbor, 60, stood up from the dinner table and keeled over dead before he hit the ground.

Buddy in Australia, 64, was dead on the couch when his wife came back from getting something in the kitchen that didn't take 30 seconds.

Old girlfriend from high school, 58, literally had a fish on the line in the Rogue River when she dropped dead.

Best friend's big brother, 65, rode bike at least 100 miles per week and rode with a bunch of 30 somethings because of his fitness. Stopped during a ride to get water, sat down on a bench and leaned over and died.

don't pass on seconds when the lasagna comes around.

Yep, knew a guy that didn't ever take vacations during his work career. Saving all he could for retirement. Died before he retired, early 60's. That's why my wife and I are lucky to work from home or Florida. We travel when we can and take advantage of it while still relatively young.

You're doing it right. I spent about 10 years in factory management in my younger days and one of the things that stuck with me was how soon so many of my colleagues died after retiring. Keep your loyalty to your employer in perspective, if you dropped dead tomorrow they'd replace you within two days.

Houndie and Gil are definitely correct...my leadership asked me several times to not retire when I did...and I’ve never regretted my decision...

I saved, invested, and planned...and knew it was my time to go...both for myself, and to allow a younger guy to advance...

The wife and I are enjoying life...slower, spending less than when we were working...but getting what we want and need...

I feel for the folks losing paychecks, but if we’re to get the government under control, people are going to lose jobs...

This is a extremely sloppy way to do it...and I hope it ends soon...

But I know neither party will do anything to make the government more manageable, so I guess we’re stuck with what we have...

I had a captain - a really well liked guy on my police department - who kept being talked into staying just another year... he did that for several years until he had about 40 years on the job. Two weeks after he finally retired he was diagnosed with leukemia and was dead 4 months after that.

When I get my 20 in the foreign service I’m DONE. I’ve been working since I was 13 with a four year break for college. When I retire the only thing I’m lifting is the mainsail halyard on the boat

I seen the same scenario many times, they work those extra years and die shortly after retirement. I retired at 58 and have no regrets. My pension is a bit smaller than if I stayed working, but at least I can enjoy a few years before I really slow down.

The man who hired me into civil service and was my boss for the first five years of my civilian career was a similar story to the ones above. He was single, never married, no kids and a workaholic. He finally retired at the end of the fiscal year in 2011, after putting in one final year-end shake-out, which was an extremely busy time. As the story was related to me (I had long since left Dover for DC), the Contracting Squadron at Dover AFB got a call from the electric company the following January inquiring about why Jim's electric bill had gone three months without payment. They couldn't get ahold of Jim, so one of the Division Chiefs drove to his house just outside Dover. When she got there, she said there was no answer at the door, but she noticed the mailbox was stuffed full of mail, so she called the police for a welfare check. They entered the home, and found badly decomposed Jim on his couch. They approximated time of death to within days of his retirement.

The bottom line is that this is totally unnecessary. What we have is a situation where Trump spit out ignorant, simplistic proposals during his campaign and now his ignorant, simplistic base expects to see some things that are actually not realistic happen. So he has to act like he's doing something on "the wall." And in the process he is causing disruption that is totally uncalled for. And the gutless Republicans in Congress won't stand up to him.

I would add to that
the average American doesn't really understand what a government shutdown is
and doesn't actually care either - unless they are told to care by somebody

None of it is discernable from where I sit unless the SS checks quit coming. Expectation of which is why I started drawing 80% at 63 instead of waiting. Republicans are simply incapable of resisting the urge to steal from taxpayers.

It’s also half the story

These shutdowns are the product of a complete ossification in Congress, caused by a number of things but primarily the 24 hour infotainment cycle

Every congresscritter is shilling for each and every vote and that means the fringes of each base are in control - which means no quarter, no compromise under ANY circumstances.

Therefore, shutdowns (and they will become more common)

And that is precisely why the left is for open borders and full blown state communism, and the right is for Angry Jesus and an M1 Abrams in every garage

Here’s a good example why Congress doesn’t do anything^^^^^

Because each side will reliably blame the other and each base will believe the problem is solely on the other side

I need ideas, beside hookers, blow, and hard liquor, for passing the time. I've only been unemployed for 12 days, but I'm bored out of my everloving mind. I'd go on a cross-country drive if I wasn't recallable overnight when they finally pass a budget.

With no job, my sleep schedule is all fucked up. For instance, I didn't go to bed until 5:30am and got up at 11am. This is no way to go through life.

According to the local libertarian talking head, since you are an "unessential worker", that means that you and the rest of the unessentials could all be permanently fired and Government would operate just fine.

With no job, my sleep schedule is all fucked up. For instance, I didn't go to bed until 5:30am and got up at 11am. This is no way to go through life.
