I own guns. I'm not anti-gun. But in Texas I don't need a background check or registration. I think that people will get guns if they want but it will help to know that it is harder for people with a criminal history or mental illness to get them. Clearly a ban doesn't work because pot is illegal and easy to get.

Its like the Simpsons when Homer wants to buy a gun "A five day waiting period? But I'm angry now!"
I didn't mean to combine both of those into one post. I also didn't mean to suggest you were anti-gun.

Please accept my utmost apologies.

This discussion our country needs to, and will undertake now is not about banning all guns, it will be about better gun control and banning weapons and accessories such as fully automatic rifles and 100 round clips.

In the eight years since the Automatic Weapons Ban expired when the Republican controlled Congress refused to renew it, mass shootings in the United States have nearly tripled.
Do you not understand what it takes to get a fully automatic rifle? Really, do you? Don't talk about things that you know NOTHING about. I could probably take up a collection so we could send you to china or japan or korea or wherever, to get you idiots out of this country one at a time.
The idiot obviously doesn't.

Of course this doesn't include the thousands and thousands hurt and killed by your dirt shovels, your plastic shovel (and pail), and grain shovels just to name a few. We will never forget those lost in the infamous chicken slaughter in Alameda in 2011.

No problem. I did see the silliness in saying tougher registration doesn't stop people from getting guns. But I do think it does for those that don't have access from say a parent. But something will shake out of this.

Your point, which is on target, relates to the difficulty we have rooting out people with mental issues...

Fix that problem and much of these mass shooting will disappear...

We have a problem in this country of going after the wrong issue to fix problems...

Like wanting more taxes when we have a spending problem...like passing something like 0bamacare before doing Tort Reform...like going after legal gun owners instead of fixing access to mental health records to prevent people like the Arizona and Colorado shooters from even getting weapons...

There are background checks on guns.

you can purchase guns at gun shows without a background check and online through retailers and websites such as craigslist, again without background checks. 40% of all gun purchases in the United States occur without a background check.

It happened in a gun free zone. You know a place where guns are illegal. But that didn't stop anything.

I've wanted more restrictions long before today. I opposed the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban in 2004.

More restrictions that could have prevented this? Require trigger locks?

The ease of access to guns in the country is a problem. However you are right on the mental health issues part, but it doesn't end there.

Exactly. That was a head scratcher, but so are most ill-informed statements by libs regarding guns. Trigger locks serve one purpose: to keep small kids from shooting a gun (one that was improperly stored most likely). A lunatic on a mission is going to regard a trigger lock as a minor speed bump.

Ding ding ding we have a winner!
"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem."
