“The world is not something indifferent, raw material to be utilized simply as we see fit. Rather, it is part of God’s good plan, in which all of us are called to be sons and daughters in the one Son of God, Jesus Christ (cf. Eph 1:4-12).”

No dawg. Religion is about the fact that we are the only species able to contemplate its own mortality. The only species that must grapple with the realization that death is coming. The only species able to contemplate the question of whether or not our essence lives on. That sort of thing.houndawg wrote:Actually religion is about control and separating the feeble-minded from their money.JohnStOnge wrote:Clenz, again: Religion has to do with the meaning of life for human beings. life after death or lack thereof, and so forth. why dont you go back, read the post, and then consider your reply
religion most certainly IS about mortality, and its evasion
a uniquely human thing

Some human's can't contemplate their own mortality. I doubt my 9 month old sits up at night wondering about her eventual death. I'm not saying you are wrong. Just....myopic.

some of you are arguing with JSO because its your default position to do so
he is correct in that the core of religion is to explain the unexplainable - 2000 years ago that was a long list, but at its heart was, "is this all?"
today the list is shorter but the main question- the ultimate one- still remains, and it is still the prime mover behind religious faith
what happens after I die

Re: Zimbabwe: Minnesota Dentist Being Sought For Lion Poachi
thats kinda what this board is about. My point is that religion isn't necessary to wonder about the meaning of life. The whole point of the sales job known as religion is that yes, you can avoid mortality, but to do so you must do as I say while you're here on Earth. JSO seems to believe that if you aren't religious you can't possibly understand these things.CID1990 wrote:your 9 month old also cant wipe her own ass or drive a dump truck, eitherIbanez wrote:

JSO, like me to a certain extent, often exposes the ugly truth of things - sexual appetites, human response to environmental catastrophe, the plight of animals, minorities, religion...
He's often right on, but he usually stops there, and that's why people argue with him. He rarely entertains the notion that we can do better or transcend. Sometimes he even argues that status quo is the best route, an aggressive fatalism perhaps. He seems to never offer any solutions because solutions would make his arguments, which for the most part are simple observations, null.
