Good point on the one link with the Autonation CEO, but that still doesn't change the fact that a lot of Wallstreet isn't onboard with the Tesla hype (I included a couple of links, are others).
That's different and completely valid. Wall Street investors not being on board with a company is nothing new. They may have very valid points.

But the Head of a dealership being against Tesla isn't surprising and anything they say should be taken with a grain a salt. :twocents: :coffee:

Any car company that doesnt intentionally engineer a short life expectancy into their cars (think around 100,000 miles ) is going to be at odds with Big Detroit

Ive been in and out of the Tesla, driven one (yes the Ludicrous Speed version) and have a couple of acquaintances who have them (for some time now)...

they are VERY good cars and GM us going to pull out all the stops to make them as expensive and hard to obtain as possible (with help from 50 state legislatures)

Yes but they are immaterial as they do not have offices in the back pockets of every US politician the way the Big Three do

we dont bail out Toyota and Honda every few years

And those relationships run deep ^ my friend...
Washington State passed the "TESLA Exception" the big three were heartbroken and said as much
But the Washington State legislature did close the door behind TESLA, hence the term "TESLA Exception"

Musk has got a cult like following in the same vein as Steve Jobs did..and the cult like hype is what they're trading on now. Now maybe Tesla will deliver like Apple did. But that remains to be seen..

"Tesla Sued Over ‘Dangerously Defective’ Autopilot Software

Tesla Inc. was sued by vehicle owners over claims its Autopilot feature is “dangerously defective” when engaged.

Drivers relying on the electric carmaker’s autonomous driving technology have “become beta testers of half-baked software that renders Tesla vehicles dangerous,” according to a complaint filed Wednesday in federal court in San Jose, California. Consumers allege their cars -- purchased for $81,000 to $113,000 -- veer off lanes while often “lurching, slamming on the brakes for no reason, and failing to slow or stop when approaching other vehicles" when Autopilot is activated.

The case was filed as a class-action on behalf of owners of 47,000 Model S and Model X cars sold in 2016 and 2017."

this has little to do with Tesla and everything to do with legal greed

you know good and well the the moment self-driving cars became even a remote idea there were lawfirms drawing up boilerplate lawsuits ready to go

"Tesla factory workers reveal pain, injury and stress: 'Everything feels like the future but us'
Exclusive: CEO Elon Musk defends workplace, saying ‘[we are not] just greedy capitalists who skimp on safety’ – and declares his $50bn company overvalued

When Tesla bought a decommissioned car factory in Fremont, California, Elon Musk transformed the old-fashioned, unionized plant into a much-vaunted “factory of the future”, where giant robots named after X-Men shape and fold sheets of metal inside a gleaming white mecca of advanced manufacturing.

The appetite for Musk’s electric cars, and his promise to disrupt the carbon-reliant automobile industry, has helped Tesla’s value exceed that of both Ford and, briefly, General Motors (GM). But some of the human workers who share the factory with their robotic counterparts complain of grueling pressure – which they attribute to Musk’s aggressive production goals – and sometimes life-changing injuries.

Ambulances have been called more than 100 times since 2014 for workers experiencing fainting spells, dizziness, seizures, abnormal breathing and chest pains, according to incident reports obtained by the Guardian. Hundreds more were called for injuries and other medical issues.

In a phone interview about the conditions at the factory, which employs about 10,000 workers, the Tesla CEO conceded his workers had been “having a hard time, working long hours, and on hard jobs......"

JohnStOnge wrote:On the mileage per charge thing: It's really a function of how long it takes to charge and how far you can go on a charge. I figure when I'm in "make progress" mode on a long road trip stopping for gas will cost me 10 to 15 minutes.

According to Tesla's site (https://www.tesla.com/charging), if you go on a long road trip, a 30 minute charge will get you about 170 miles.

So let's say you're taking an 800 mile drive in a day. If you are going in a gasoline powered vehicle that gives you 400 miles per tank that means one 10 to 15 minute stop for gas. If you're going in a Tesla and go with the 300 mile best case initial fully charged range you go 300 miles then you have to stop for 30 minutes ot get another 170. That gets you to 470. Then you have to stop for another 30 mintues to get you to 640.

So you're talking about 10 to 15 minutes of "refueling time" vs. an hour.
I don't think the average driver is driving 800 miles a day. I'm sure there are plenty of drivers that will take their Tesla or Chevy Volt on a long trip. But I would assume that the person that can afford a Tesla, will fly the 800 or 1000 miles instead of driving. :coffee: You're hung up on the long trip (which is a valid) but I think you focus on it more so b/c you have phobia/fear of flying.

I see a lot of electric vehicles, mostly the Volt and Teslas (and mostly the SUV) but there's the occasional BMW.

I suspect the age range of an electric car owner is between 20-50. Based off the data from the US DOT, the avg daily mileage is closer to 40 miles. https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/onh00/bar8.htm

The Volt is a hybrid. :coffee:

Popular Mechanics just named the all-electric version their 2017 Car of the Year based on its 260 mile range

How nice of Tesla to let customers use all of their battery capacity in an emergency situation. What an exemplary company!

But it wasn’t long before some critics began highlighting the coin’s other side, which is that Tesla has (in a sense) been throttling customers’ vehicles unless they fork over extra cash.
Is Tesla a car manufacturer, or an Internet Service Provider? :suspicious:

Some have rev limiters, but not governors per se. Most high end cars' top speeds are drag-limited. No need for a governor. And if you did have a governor set at, say, 215 mph and someone crashes their Lambo, that's litigation city.

How is it different than your gas light going on at "empty" but you still have 30 miles until you truly run out?

Well, you can actually use that gas. You aren't going to run out of gas in the middle of nowhere and get a message on your dashboard saying "oops, you ran out of gas! learn how you can use the rest of your gas tank by subscribing to Ford premium!".

I've got no problem with this, other than Tesla's ability to change your battery capacity at the flip of a switch. If you bought a 60 kwh battery, or one that's limited to that amount, then they gave you what you paid for. If you wanted the capability to use 75 kwH (another 30 miles), then you can pay for that. At no time did you have to pay for something you didn't get, so it seems alright to me.
