They just had a mini-series on Grant. Some people didn't see it.

“The use of slaves on the farm…was a source of irritation and shame to Grant. Jefferson Sapington told me that he and Grant used to work in the fields with the blacks. He said with glee, ‘Grant was helpless when it came to making slaves work,’ and Mrs. Boggs corroborated this. ‘He was no hand to manage negroes,’she said. ‘He couldn’t force them to do anything. He wouldn’t whip them. He was too gentle and good tempered and besides he was not a slavery man.’”

Whether or not Grant wasn’t a “slavery man” by inclination, we know he briefly owned William Jones. He does not mention Jones in his memoirs or other writings, so the exact nature of their relationship remains a mystery. We do know that in March 1859 Grant filed the following manumission document.

“I Ulysses S Grant of the City and County of St. Louis in the State of Missouri, for diverse good and valuable considerations me hereunto moving, do hereby emancipate and set free from Slavery my negro man William, sometimes called William Jones(Jones)of Mullatto complexion, aged about thirty-five years, and about five feet seven inches in height and being the same slave purchased by me of Frederick Dent-And I do hereby manumit, emancipate & set free said William from slavery forever.”

It is notable that Grant did not sell or work out a plan with Jones to purchase his freedom, but simply freed him.

Protesters in San Francisco on Friday toppled the statue of former President Grant, who led the Union Army during the Civil War, in Golden Gate Park.

San Francisco police said that approximately 400 people gathered around 8 p.m. to take down the statue, though no arrests were made, according to NBC Bay Area.
Bye bye Francis Scott Key
Also torn down in the park on Friday were the statues of St. Junipero Serra and Francis Scott Key, who wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Interesting that they tear down the statue of the Roosevelt that didn't put Japanese-Americans in concentration camps.

Had his own issues.

In 1906, a small group of black soldiers was accused of going on a shooting spree in Brownsville, Texas, killing one white man and wounding another. Despite conflicting accounts and the lack of physical evidence, the Army assumed the guilt of the black soldiers. When not one of them admitted responsibility, an irritated Roosevelt ordered the dishonorable discharge of three companies of black soldiers (160 men) without a trial. Roosevelt and the white establishment had assumed the soldiers were guilty without affording them the opportunity for a trial to confront their accusers or prove their innocence.

Grant didn’t own slaves. He had that one guy but he hated the situation and freed him. He was vocal in his opposition to slavery. I don’t understand this one. What idiots.

And Francis Scott Key...? Is he known for anything other than a super long poem that was put to the music of another song?

They also vandalized the statue of Miguel de Cervantes who authored Don Quixote. Cervantes was literally a slave in North Africa for 5 years. :dunce:

Grant has his issues with the Jews.

Let’s face it ... this is just vengeance at this point.

 See my earlier comment about people not knowing history. I don't know who Miguel de Cervantes, but I'd like to think I wouldn't just be indiscriminately vandalizing statues just b/c i'm outraged.

This purity movement is already starting to make the fatal mistakes that'll end up destroying it. I hope they vandalize a Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas or Robert Smalls statue next.

It takes most “movements” at least 50 or so years to be portrayed for their central ignorance by historians

Some take longer... we STILL have people trying to do socialism “correctly”

But I am convinced this one is going to be ridiculed within 10... if there are any non-cancelled actual historians to do it. It’s basically book burning

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/famil ... atest_news
The family of a Texas woman who once portrayed Aunt Jemima has called on the breakfast brand to reconsider its decision to scrap the ubiquitous fixture from its products.

Vera Harris said the family takes pride in Quaker Oates scouting her second cousin Lillian Richard to become a brand representative in 1925, news station KLTV reported.

“She was considered a hero in [her hometown of] Hawkins, and we are proud of that. We do not want that history erased,” Harris said.

Fake black guy Shaun King calls for going after religious imagery because "white". Comments in the twitter thread are saying the Quran calls Muhammad "white" and that he had black slaves (any Muslin on here to fact check this?). Wonder if he'll call for his blm jihad to target the muslins as well.
