I still blame this on the giving everyone a voice to say things out loud moment that came when newspapers first went online and opened up the comment feature on their stories (and truth be told even message boards like this). It just gave everyone everywhere a chance to shout something out into the void for people to hear, and so, so many people had absolutely nothing valuable to offer, yet shouted anyway.
