Where did you hear this?Baldy wrote: For someone claiming to be a student of this country's political history, you don't seem to know very much.
What happened yesterday isn't something that has been brewing for the last two years, it is something that has been brewing for decades. Do you know anything about the 1960's? Are you aware that violent politically motivated left-wing extremists blew up the US Capitol, the Pentagon, police stations from San Fransisco to Boston, exploded bombs in the homes of Federal judges, and were responsible for countless other bombings all over the country? If these violent acts were committed by mere radical right-wing extremists, they would have been executed or still be locked in prison, but since these acts were perpetuated by radical leftists, they get to become tenured professors teaching our children at distinguished universities.
I said it in another post and I'll say it again. I think this guy is nothing more than a David Berkowitz or John Hinckley Jr. Berkowitz became the "Son of Sam" because his neighbor's dog told him to kill people, and Hinkley tried to assassinate Reagan because he wanted to impress Jodie Foster. Who knows what this guy's motivations were, but I very seriously doubt it was "right-wing" political hate speech especially, since by all accounts, the guy was a radical leftist.![]()

Meet Daniel Hernandez, the intern who likely saved Gabrielle Giffords’ life

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket ... fords-life" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Daniel Hernandez had only been Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' intern for five days, and on Saturday, he may have saved her life.
The University of Arizona junior was standing 30 feet away from the Democratic congresswoman when she was shot in the head at a meet-and-greet event in her district, and he immediately rushed to her side. As everyone on hand waited for emergency medical support to arrive, Hernandez held Giffords's head in his lap and applied pressure to her wound.
At the same time, Hernandez advised others on providing help for the other 20 others injured and killed in the attack—and that quick thinking has led many to label him a hero in Saturday's horrific event.
"When I heard gunshots, my first instinct was to head toward the congresswoman to make sure that she was okay," Hernandez said in an interview with ABC's Christine Amanpour Sunday. "Once I saw that she was down, and there were more than one victim, I went ahead and started doing the limited triage that I could with what I had."
Hernandez, who is 20, told ABC that he simply "shut off all emotion." "I knew I wouldn't be good to anyone if I had a breakdown," he recalled. He noted that he went to help because he had "limited experience in triage and training."
He lifted up Giffords' head, because he feared she might choke on her own blood, and used smocks from the grocery store's meat department as a makeshift bandages for her and other victims.
Giffords, he says, was alert, but couldn't talk.
"'Just grab my hand to let me know that you're okay,'" he recalls telling the injured lawmaker.
According to Hernandez, she squeezed his hand, and he didn't let go, riding with her in the ambulance to the hospital, where she was rushed into emergency surgery.
"It was probably not the best idea to run toward the gunshots," he told the Arizona Republic. "But people needed help."

Agreed on their views being opinions, but basing your statements on one persons twitter account isn't right either. How do you know that the girl isn't lying. If you have another source please let me know, but if this is the only source you have you probalby should just let it go right now.Baldy wrote:Their views are just opinions because the victim's husband, father, and the Pima County sheriff don't know the guy.Skjellyfetti wrote:

Agreed. Besides, based on the early info coming out the guy was clearly unbalanced, does it really matter which party he supported? One persons twitter interview isn't proof, but the NY Times is writing complete articles on nothing more than pure speculation.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art ... 5752b395a5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; An official familiar with the Arizona shooting investigation says local authorities are looking at a possible connection between Jared Loughner and an online group known for its anti-government rhetoric.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, says this is one of several motives that local authorities are pursuing in the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.
The anti-government organization American Renaissance is connected to the white supremacist New Century Foundation, according to an analysis by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based group that tracks hate crimes.
Members typically espouse anti-Semitic and anti-government views. Loughner's online postings include language that is in line with such beliefs.

Like I said before, if we start out of the gate pointing fingers and calling each other harsh derogatory names then there is very little opportunity to mourn, reflect, and learn from this horrible event. No wonder we can't seem to make any headway. I blame this largely on the 24 hour news cycle, and the culture of "gotta know it now" that it has created. I guess I just would like to see people really torn up about this and sending out messages of caring and peace to the families of the victims instead of rabidly going on the attack against the percieved devils that caused this. Stop for a minute and feel for that mom and dad who just lost their child. Walk for a minute in their shoes and all that other stuff just seems a little ridiculous. But that's just wishful thinking on my part. So go ahead and have at it. You folks don't seem to give a **** about that little girl, just how this justifies your hate for "fill in the blank here with your favorite pundit".

Re: BREAKING: Rep Gabrielle Giffords; Several Others Shot
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2011/0109/ ... rant-group" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;A possible link between Jared Lee Loughner, the primary suspect in the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and American Renaissance, the publication of an anti-immigration group, offers potential new insights into what may have caused the 22-year-old Arizonan to carry out the attack, which killed six people and wounded more than a dozen outside a Tucson, Ariz. stripmall on Saturday.
The shooting attack gravely wounded Representative Giffords and killed her aide Gabriel Zimmerman, US District Judge John Roll, a nine-year-old girl, and three others. The hail of gunfire shocked the nation and reinvigorated scrutiny of rancor and anger-fueled debate in American politics.
On Sunday, Fox News quoted a Department of Homeland Security memo that states Mr. Loughner is "possibly linked" to American Renaissance, which DHS says promotes views that are "anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG [Zionist Occupational Government], anti-Semitic." Both Giffords and Mr. Zimmerman are Jewish.
American Renaissance is the publication of the The New Century Foundation, described by the Anti-Defamation League as a "self-styled think tank." The ADL, on its website, calls American Renaissance a "white supremacist journal and companion Website" that "promotes pseudoscientific studies that attempt to demonstrate the intellectual and cultural superiority of whites and publishes articles on the supposed decline of American society because of integrationist social policies."
The DHS memo quoted on Fox goes on to say: "Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the target of Loughner’s firing frenzy, is the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate."
"When you look at Loughner's web posts, he puts himself out as half fantasy seeker and dreamer and half political philosopher, and American Renaissance, while a hate group, markets itself as a political philosophy organization," says Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, at San Bernardino.
Mark Pitcavage, director of investigative research at the Anti-Defamation League, is skeptical about any hard connection between Loughner and American Renaissance.
"The fans of American Renaissance tend to be older and they tend to be intellectuals or pseudo-intellectuals," says Mr. Pitcavage. "Based on the limited nature of [Loughner's] internet footprint suggesting his thoughts and beliefs, there's nothing to lead one to think he would lean that way. It's perplexing to us that there is a notion of a substantial connection."
In Arizona, particularly, immigration issues, including the passage of a tough anti-immigration law last year, overlapped with parts of the broader tea party agenda. Giffords narrowly defeated a tea party candidate in November's election. She supported the federal health-care reform law and spoke out against Arizona's tough anti-immigration law, both counter to her tea party opponent. American Renaissance's website carries what appears to be a paid tea party advertisement featuring the "Don't Tread on Me" flag that's become synonymous with many of the movement's protests.

That's exactly what I am. Over myself. I'm over the selfish nature of most people that would rather talk about the politics and the shooter than spend time worrying about the victims. Get over yourself houndy. I'd like to suggest a 24 hour moratorium on discussing the politics of the situation and focus on things like that kid who ran to her aid. And pass on any info anyone gets about the status of the representatives health. Try to stay focused on the important things for now, until we know that the congresswoman is going to make it.houndawg wrote:get over yourselfdeath dealer wrote: Maybe a little time to reflect on what led up to this tragedy, a little reprieve for the families of the victims and the victims themselves can absorb what has happened and grieve. "She answered the question; he didn't find it acceptable, he didn't like the answer," Orr said.
"In the time since then, investigators believe perhaps he was tracking her and targeting her in a very loose way," Orr told CBS chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer.
"We should say that Loughner has made threats in the past," Orr added. "Police knew this guy. He had made these threats, general in nature, not specific."
Orr said that Loughner had not been arrested for the threats and therefore had nothing on him that was actionable.
