Is that what we called the Great Recession in 2008? We're a little early into this, so it's hard to see what the damage will be. Right now, it's basically stock values. If you don't need the money right away, you could be right, it may be just fine for many folks. Of course, for people that need this money in the short term they could be screwed. If and when it moves into job layoffs or other things, such as an extended economic downturn, then it will be something else and not a good thing. If this is bluster and part of negotiating tactics, maybe it could work. But right now it seems to be more of playing a game of chicken rather than some 5D chess thing.Caribbean Hen wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 6:04 am Lots of buying opportunities in the market right now

well lots of people, mostly younger, think the stock market just keeps going up forever and, in a way, they are right, but stocks have been way overvalued for a long time and we were overdue for a hit. If they really needed this money in the short term, it should not have been in the stock marketGannonFan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 6:38 amIs that what we called the Great Recession in 2008? I discovered Treasury direct back when Biden started raising rates to get his inflation under control and that 5.5 pct yield was ok for a while. Now that the Trump has gone all in on tariffs, it's probably a good time to pick up some stocks that took a hit. Might even be a bit early to try that but trying to time the market perfectly is foolish.
Just keep DCA kids and when these market tanks happen you will be getting more shares for the same amount of dollars invested and eventually it will come back up

We'll see. Today it's stocks (and not just the risky investments, losses have been across the board), but if tomorrow it's consumer prices and if the day after that it's inflation, then this little experiment in returning to protectionism and mercantilism will know its outcome. How this gets played out over the next couple of months and further will determine this. Trump has been known to use tariffs as a brute force negotiation tactic - but sometimes if you keep doing the same thing over and over again opponents adjust to that strategy. Obviously time will tell.Caribbean Hen wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:12 amwell lots of people, mostly younger, think the stock market just keeps going up forever and, in a way, they are right, but stocks have been way overvalued for a long time and we were overdue for a hit. And many of our former trade partners are being proactive and quickly firing back.
They’re apparently not going to take a wait and see approach. Nor should they. They also know how Trump will back down from a bluff.

I'm not really a fan of the tariffs but let's re-evaluate in a few years.. Trump was going to do this no matter what. If it turns out he was wrong, he has some time to ditch them

You’re mistaken if you think I’m here to defend the likes of Pelosi and Schumer. Can’t stand either one of them.
Now..back to the hypocrisy and cult behavior of your friends who are in power.

Don't care for one minute if you defend your fellow progtards or not, I just enjoy pointing out the utter hypocrisy of the geriatric caucus of the Donk party and their social media worshipers.

The use of “tard” says more about the person using it than it does about whoever they’re attempting to mock.Baldy wrote:Don't care for one minute if you defend your fellow progtards or not, I just enjoy pointing out the utter hypocrisy of the geriatric caucus of the Donk party and their social media worshipers.
