If Russia "annexed" part or all of one of the baltic countries that would be the end of nato- no way we will go to war over Latvia or Estonia

Putin knows this which is why once he has a puppet government installed in Kiev he will waste no time moving on Tallinn

people need to understand what makes Putin, and more importantly, Sergey Lavrov tick. They hate NATO and the fact that as soon as the USSR disintegrated we wasted no time spiking the ball by inviting former Soviet states in

Putin's sole aim is the destruction of nato and he knows exactly how easy it would be
I agree that Putin wants NATO crushed...but WHY?

We got our panties in a bunch when Russia sent missile to Cuba, so WTF were we thinking when we invited the Baltic states into NATO? And then we talked about adding other former Russian states. Hellooooooooooo.

Recently, Obama continued to shove NATO in Russia's face...and then we helped destabilize Libya, Syria, and, yes, Ukraine.

Putin knows he can't keep expanding the Russian empire and using his troops for no reason. He just can't go to open war and sustain casualties...he'd lose his support.

His only legitimate trigger point is that the West is pinning Russia in. That is true...and stupid of the West.

I don't see Putin rolling tanks into the Baltic states. Sure, he will always try to destabilize those countries' political foundations (we would do that to our neighbors, too, if we felt they were a threat), but open war? He's already seen that his new tanks can be killed by TOW missiles. His planes can be easily shot down.

He knows his limitations. Hell, we don't have to go to war to bloody his nose...just infiltrate more missiles into his back yard and he'll get the message. But, will we get his message? :suspicious:

But, all this brings up a good point...should we defend Europe? Should we shoulder the financial burden of a cocky bunch of European clowns trying to build a Western european-centric world? :suspicious:

Nope.

Take care of our folks first.

We don't have to totally abandon the world, but we sure should stop policing the world on our own.

Germany, Britain, et aliae can stand on their own merits. And yes, I used the feminine plural for those folks.

would significantly weaken NATO because of the 28 member countries the US by far provides the most might. Heck, Russia already recently HAS INVADED 3 parts of 3 former Soviet republics that aren't part of NATO. Now I should have said Russia is a threat to invade the Baltics IF NATO was significantly weakened.

As far as threat to the US mainland:
-Conventional: Little to none.
-Nuclear: Low because of MAD, and much lower than during Cold War.

Just a little excerpt from a long read: "Europe As a key strategic region, how threatened are U.S. interests in Europe?

....Threat of Regional War
To many U.S. allies, Russia does pose a threat. At times, this threat is of a military nature. At other times, Russia uses less conventional tactics such as cyber attacks, utilization of energy resources, and propaganda.....
.......Russian Pressure on Central and Eastern Europe. Moscow poses a security challenge to members of NATO that border Russia. Although the likelihood of a conventional Russian attack against the Baltic States is low, primarily because it would trigger a NATO response, Russia has used non-conventional means to erode the political systems and legitimacy of these states. The Baltic States continue to view Russia as a significant threat...."

Putin IS a threat to Eastern and even Central Europe. To the US, not so much..
Ahhhh...the old, "Russia still wants to rule the world" routine.

Russia is a threat to Eastern and Central Europe only if they continue to poke the bear.

Again, if Russia helped throw out Mexico's elected President, and then installed a bunch of crooked creeps that would close out our trade and start trade with Russia, we'd lose our minds and kick some azz.

Putin is predictable. Loved his move into Syria. :thumb: Loved his annexation of Crimea. Love his support for the Russian people in the Ukraine. :notworthy:

Europe and America pushed hard...he pushed back. Understandable...and admirable. We'd have done the same thing.

Easy to calm everything down...if we tell Europe to stop thinking they have the answers to the world's problems (hey, who wanted us to remove Q-boy down in Libya), and to respect Russian interests. That isn't Chamberlainesque...that is common sense.

Oh man, for once in my life, I wish I had been watching MSNBC:
MSNBC host Chris Matthews was caught gushing over Melania Trump’s physical appearance while still wearing his microphone.

“Did you see her walk? Runway walk. My God is that good,” Matthews said of Donald Trump’s wife during the network's live coverage of Indiana’s primary on Tuesday night.

“I could watch that runway show,” he added, seemingly unaware that he was being recorded.

Following the “Hardball” host’s comments, co-anchor Brian Williams quickly moved to a commercial.

We were asking that question pretty much every year 1914-1990. Especially 1914-1916 and 1939-1941. Still have been asking that question somewhat since 1990..

I say not to the extent ee are now. Western & Central Europe need to step it up.

My last comment in the Republican Primary thread is this:

This year forced me to come to grips with something. For years I have defended Republican voters. When people said they were stupid I argued they aren't. When people said they were irrational I argued not so. When people said they were hateful I defended them.

But what happened this year showed that there really IS a very ugly underbelly to the Republican electorate. A lot of what people have been saying about it was just shown to be true. You have a critical mass of people in the Republican electorate composed of horribly ignorant, irrational, hateful people. There's no longer any basis for denying it.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

Most of us were already saying that in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Finally an outsider without all the PAC spending and who isn't tone deaf to the anger of working people has come in to foil the Romney's, Cheney's, McCain's, and Bush's. Change is good.

Excellent.

Now, focus on Hillary's puppets and you could say the same thing.

You see, John, the party loonies are two sides of the same coin. Irrational idiots. Rich or poor, the whack jobs exist on both sides of the spectrum...and unfortunately the puppet masters (establishment folks) keep pulling the strings.

Welcome to reality.

Now, go out and vote for the one person (Bernie, unfortunately, is toast) that sticks a fork up the establishment's arse. Trump. :thumb:

I believe we should be pulling back from them - but your comment only reinforces what I said. You understand little to nothing about Russia and why they matter-

a lot like the Prez
Do your superiors realize what kind of talent is being wasted writing parking tickets in Africa? Now be a good fellow and run along and start a thread about Russia somewhere. This one is about the Republican primary. ;)
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.
