I kinda like danefan's idea. We take Mexico, but it's just a temporary strategy move. Very few of us will actually colonize there. We open secret facilities where the Mexican workers do nothing but produce Labatt. By the time production is complete it'll be way too hot to live in Mexico, but we'll have significantly reduced our overhead for the Canada project. Then we get Canada.
The next step is constructing climate control bubbles for both Mexico and Canada. 70 degrees every day baby!!
The oddest part about the whole process is that our country's name would actually get MORE specific. We'd go from the US of A the U.S. of North A.

I have long been a proponent of pushing all the Mexicans south through Panama and then building a wall on the north end of Panama for our border.
Then we could put all the liberals on the south end of Mexico and let them fu*k that country up and get invaded by Panama in about 6 weeks.

What's to stop Virgin (who I think would love to get into the space game) from exploring, finding some gem of technology or health and charging us through the freaking nose for it? Isn't that our complaint about health care? We need it, it's out there, there are private companies that have it, but their greed has caused them to charge an almost unattainable price.
Isn't there are an argument out there that NASA's exploration and research is a way to cut that process off at the pass? Keep the findings owned by the government and subsequently control the way corporate america exploits it.
Again, I know there are some differences I'm missing, but I don't see them right now.

Re: Obama Cancels Constellation Program
This is one thing I was hoping Obama would NOT cut out from the budget. That was one of the few good things that GWB did in his presidency.
Too many ignorant people on both the right and left think we were doing this just to impress other countries, get Americans in a patriotic fervor, and to study frog copulation in zero gravity. Just like project Mercury and Gemini, it's a stepping stone to bigger and better things. We've already fallen way behind where we could be today because of what Reagan (with the blessing of donk leaders in congress) did after the Challenger disaster (which was totally unnecessary because the incident was really the fault of dumbass administrators who didn't f%^&ing listen to the engineers who said it wasn't safe to launch). I wish Americans who think this isn't worthwhile could be forced to go a week without any technologies that exist today because of the massive budget (in terms of percentage of federal budget, was way beyond what we were planning to spend on this) JFK was willing to give NASA in the 1960s.
F^&* you Obama. You could have trimmed the budgets off of the completely worthless departments of education and homeland security, but instead you had to make a sacrificial lamb of one of the most important long-term investments that we could possibly make.
And for those of you who think the private sector will work just as well, we may make more progress than we have been in the last 15 years or so, but it won't be a substitute for the real commitment that JFK made to it.

Good. NASA gets way too much money as it is.
Reminds me of this song:
Reminds me of this song:
Mary Alice had a baby and he looked just like I did
We got married on a Monday and I been working ever since
Every week down at the Ford Plant but now they say they're shutting down
Goddamned Reagan in the White House and no one there gives a damn
Double Digit unemployment, TVA be shutting soon
While over there in Huntsville, They puttin' people on the moon
So I took to runnin' numbers for this man I used to know
And I sell a few narcotics and I sell a little blow
I ain't getting rich now but I'm gettin' more than by
It's really tough to make a living but a man just got to try
If I died in Colbert County, Would it make the evening news?
They too busy blowin' rockets, Puttin' people on the moon
Mary Alice quit askin' why I do the things I do
I ain't sayin' that she likes it, but what else I'm gonna do?
If I could solve the world's problems I'd probably start with hers and mine
But they can put a man on the moon
And I'm stuck in Muscle Shoals just barely scraping by
Mary Alice got cancer just like everybody here
Seems everyone I know is gettin' cancer every year
And we can't afford no insurance, I been 10 years unemployed
So she didn't get no chemo so our lives was destroyed
And nothin' ever changes, the cemetery gets more full
And now over there in Huntsville, even NASA's shut down too
Another Joker in the White House, said a change was comin' round
But I'm still workin' at The Wal Mart and Mary Alice, in the ground
And all them politicians, they all lyin' sacks of shit
They say better days upon us but I'm sucking left hind tit
And the preacher on the TV says it ain't too late for me
But I bet he drives a Cadillac and I'm broke with some hungry mouths to feed
I wish I'z still an outlaw, was a better way of life
I could clothe and feed my family still have time to love my pretty wife
And if you say I'm being punished. Ain't he got better things to do?

You people need to understand that it isn't just about doing stuff just because we can do it. Space technology can create the biggest economic revolution in all of history...
1) The possibilities for manufacturing in zero gravity are virtually endless. This web site talks about just a few of them...
http://www.spaceislandgroup.com/manufacturing.html
2) Many new possibilities for renewable energy to explore.
3) Vast amounts of natural resources (ore, gas, and other things) within the solar systems that can be exploited.
We aren't going to get there with NASA's pitiful budget and using a fossil spacecraft that was designed in the 1970s. It might seemed far-fetched, but hey, many said we wouldn't go from John Glenn's 15-minute spaceflight in 1962 to the 3-day trip to the moon a short 8 years later but we did. NASA advocates aren't just Star-Trek geeks who want to visit other stars in their lifetimes.

So was it dumb when Jefferson had Lewis and Clark explore the west? I mean we knew there was land out there, some Indians, buffalo, and after that a lot of unknown. We weren't ready to develop all the land and the east coast wasn't exactly overcrowded. How did that little expedition turn out?clenz wrote:What steps? We aren't even close to being able to live in space, outside of a space center. We know no life exists in our solar system outside of Earth, to try to go to another system is just plain dumb and impossible with the money and everything.UNHWildCats wrote: its not just about going to the moon, its about the steps after that.
I have no problem with this right now.
I am not going to guarantee the constellation program would produce the same results, but possibilities are definitely there for it to be something that big. Going to Mars should be something this country strives for, scraping this only continues the status quo.
Of course Obama would rather spend billions on a high speed train, it will probably turn out like this...
