Even before the 21 percent cuts, increasing numbers of doctors refused to take Medicare patients, as the Medicare reimbursements are tiny compared to private insurance reimbursements, not even factoring in the cost and time of the additional paperwork, audits and hassle of collecting from the government bureaucracy. With a 21 percent cut in Medicare reimbursement, tens of thousands more doctors will refuse Medicare patients and the goal of getting more Americans health coverage will be countered by fewer available doctors. Medicare patients, our oldest Americans, will suffer, and a marketplace form of rationing will be imposed.
Much of this is incorrect (I should know, I work for a large medical practice.
If YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, Medicare is the most effiecent, fastest, most-hassle-free provider to collect from.
We get money from Medicare 14 days after we bill. No other provider comes close. Never been audited, because we follow Medicare's clear guidelines.
I wish all carriers were as good as Medicare - would reduce our office overhead tremendously.
OK, so you work for an office that accepts Medicare. However, many physicians do not accept it as it is, and that number is going to go up.
My father is a retired dentist, and he was the only dentist in Caswell County NC who took Medicare. In fact, he had referrals from all over Alamance, Guilford, Rockingham and Person Counties, because most dentists in those counties did not take Medicare. This was 25 years ago. The only reason Dad continued to take Medicare at a 50% reduction to his customary fees was because he was second generation (Granddad was a dentist, too) and so many of Dad's long time patients were also his father's. Some days he would say that it was so much easier to be a dentist in Caswell County if you were not from there and not tied to the community, then you could just not take Medicare with a clear conscience.
Dad's CPA did some numbers for him once, and it was determined that if he did nothing but Medicare, he would have operated at a loss after insurance and other fees/bills.
Just out of curiosity, Jon- did any of the doctors at your practice NOT accept Medicare? Have you ever worked for any that did not? If not, then you are just seeing one side of the picture.
