Yeah, Fatima was awesome. Sun careening toward the Earth and no one saw it but a bunch of people that wanted to see it. . .

But there were those skeptical journalists who had been ridiculing the children for months, who showed up at the time and place predicted, and reported that they SAW it. They went there as vicious skeptics and returned believers.Vidav wrote:Yeah, Fatima was awesome. Sun careening toward the Earth and no one saw it but a bunch of people that wanted to see it. . .
And a "bunch?" Sort of understates the crowd of of at least 30,000 -- and probably 70,000 -- people who saw it.
"Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they stood bare-headed, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws — the sun 'danced' according to the typical expression of the people." ― Avelino de Almeida,[17] writing for O Século (Portugal's most widely circulated[18] and influential newspaper, which was pro-government and anti-clerical at the time[17] Almeida's previous articles had been to satirize the previously reported events at Fátima).[5]
These young children predicted a miracle at 12 noon on Oct. 13, 1917 at the specified location, probably 70,000 people were there, and something remarkable happened.

But hey, what do those damn physicists know? Especially the ones from Catholic schools.Professor Auguste Meessen of the Institute of Physics, Catholic University of Leuven, has stated sun miracles cannot be taken at face value and that the reported observations were optical effects caused by prolonged staring at the sun. Meessen contends that retinal after-images produced after brief periods of sun gazing are a likely cause of the observed dancing effects. Similarly Meessen states that the color changes witnessed were most likely caused by the bleaching of photosensitive retinal cells.

Not to mention the Sun careening toward the Earth would probably have a lot of negative effects on the planet.
From the article you linked:

Meessen contends that retinal after-images produced after brief periods of sun gazing are a likely cause of the observed dancing effects. Similarly Meessen states that the color changes witnessed were most likely caused by the bleaching of photosensitive retinal cells.[24] Meessen observes that Sun Miracles have been witnessed in many places where religiously charged pilgrims have been encouraged to stare at the sun. He cites the apparitions at Heroldsbach, Germany (1949) as an example, where similar observations as at Fatima were witnessed by more than 10,000 people

It's amazing how easily you accept that 70,000 people were all intently staring at the sun, and this caused mass delusion.

Is the earth flat, and the center of the universe, Joe? It's pretty astounding how easily you brush aside the laws of physics simply because you think this event supports the existence of your grown-up Santa Claus.JoltinJoe wrote:It's amazing how easily you accept that 70,000 people were all intently staring at the sun, and this caused mass delusion.
Re: The Catholic saint and shrine factory comes to Wisconsin
But Ursus, no one was told beforehand that it was going to be a "sun" miracle. So they weren't standing there staring at the sun before this happened.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:I don't know Joe, it seems they accept it's possible because they have faith.JoltinJoe wrote:It's amazing how easily you accept that 70,000 people were all intently staring at the sun, and this caused mass delusion.
The children had been saying that there was a tree before which Mary had been appearing. If people were there staring at anything, it would have been at the tree.
Prof. Meesen's theory of mass delusion presupposes that 70,000 people were staring at the sun, waiting for it to do something; this caused retinal distortion, and this caused the perception of the sun moving (although the accounts were that the sun did more than move). But this presupposition is contradicted by the accounts of many witnesses, who said they were not staring at the sun or the sky before this happened. Indeed, many of the (former) skeptics present claim that they were simply milling about, talking to others, and waiting for the moment to pass uneventfully. Again, no one was "on notice" to watch the sun, because they had not been told beforehand that this was going to a sun miracle.
Also, many other physicists doubt that mass delusion, caused by retinal distortion, can explain the fact that so many people would report the same phenomena.

Here's another coincidence that is historically verifiable.
When Nagasaki was destroyed by a nuclear bomb, a single building in the city survived -- a Franciscan friary founded by Fr. Maxilliam Kolbe, a Polish priest who had served as a missionary in Nagasaki before the war.
Kolbe returned to Poland and was rounded up the Nazis. He died at Auschwitz. He volunteered to take the place of a family man who had been marked for death by the Nazi officers, in punishment for an escape by a prisoner. Kolbe died on August 14, 1941. The bombing of Nagasaki occurred on August 9, 1945 and the Japanese surrendered on August 14, 1945 -- four years to the date after Kolbe's death. VJ Day was August 15.
Now scientists can explain why Kolbe's friary survived ... but still, the one building to survive?
I won't even mention the remarkable survival of the eight priests of Hiroshima.

Joe, you're making an ass out of yourself. There no shame in admitting your myth factory is a crock of shit. It's really all about faith, right? Why do feel the need to prove these things are real or miraculous? There's one billion of you idiots out there, what the fuck else do you need?JoltinJoe wrote:Here's another coincidence that is historically verifiable.

Where? The radius of total destruction in Nagasaki was almost 1.5 miles from Ground Zero. The main part of the city (where the friary was located) was completely destroyed, except for the friary.
And in the midst of the destruction, the friary stands.

Nice job cherrypicking that photo, Joe. Yours is facing the mountains. Main part of city on the river away from the mountains.

This thread was going really well until Joe hijacked it.
Re: The Catholic saint and shrine factory comes to Wisconsin
Hah! I showed a picture of the area in the radius of complete destruction. Where are the other buildings? Don't bring pictures of the outskirts of the bombing area, where some structures are damaged but still standing. Find me another building, in the radius of complete destruction, standing intact.Skjellyfetti wrote:Nice job cherrypicking that photo, Joe. Yours is facing the mountains.
