this is a regional catastrophe - with the currents - this is a problem for northern japan's fishing fleet - and that's about it... it sucks, but if Chernobyl (so many many times worse) taught us anything - it's that nature will recover - it'll take time, and mostly people staying the fuck out of the way - but nature will recover. localized disasters like this (even the gulf oil spill) are bad - but they aren't the massive global catastrophes they are frequently made out to be.
While it is "bad" in the moment the Earth will recover and act like humans never fucked anything up. It always has, and it always will.

Scale is important. Gulf Oil Spill put a lot more toxins in a much smaller area - they are still finding oil and dispersants in the ecosystem. This is a tiny spill compared to the BP disaster.
