not in electoral politics...

polling continuously tells us that voters don't give a shit about the debt (and considering something like 70% is owned by American bond holders... that might even make some sense)

OK. Keep thinking that all the way to another embarassing blowout in 2012.

if you think voters went to the polls in 2010 because of the debt... you are kidding yourself.

2010 was about gopers being pissed about being out of power, and donks staying home and sitting on their hands because not enough got done.

spending really doesn't rankle the average voter aside from mild grumblings about there being too much of it... it isn't the kind of thing gets a voter off their ass and gets them to change behavior... the people you describe were voting conk in 06 and 08 and 10...

Boys we have been in the clutches of a small cabal of corporations since the last great hope for constitutional government on this continent laid down our arms on 9 April 1865. Some men knew this very early on.

2010 was about the economy and the unemployment rate.

64% of respondents said the economy or unemployment was their top issue... compared to 9% that said budget deficit.

I've said it over and over... but, if the economy is improved in 2012... Obama and Democrats coast.

Only an idiot would believe that the budget deficit doesn't have a significant economic impact. I suspect the "Dissatisfaction with government" category is also related in large part to the government's fiscal irresponsibility.

Exactly. That time frame was the transformation by LBJ and his 'great society' of the US into one of the world's largest welfare states. Budget exploding programs like Medicare, Medicaid, the fictional 'war on poverty', the NEA, CPB, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, etc, etc, etc. all came out of this period.

Looks like from the late Reagan years up until the beginning of George W the debt growth was slowing and the debt itself was getting ready to plateau and then fall.

I more or less agree with TTBF. things were good back when you could count on donks to increase spending for butter and decrease it for guns and the conks would do vice versa. The Obushma policy is to increase spending for both.

I disagree with the bit about TV and radio, though. The problem is the special interests that protect their pieces of the government waste pie. The military and medical industrial complexes make it impossible to cut spending on SS and defense.

President Obama said today that he is going to cut the federal deficit in half by 2013.

“I refuse to leave our children with a debt they cannot repay,” he said in remarks opening the one-day summit at the White House. “We cannot and will not sustain deficits like these without end. ... We cannot simply spend as we please.” (source: CNN)

I believe Obama, hes going to do in 2 years what it took them 30 years to fu*k up..........he really is the chosen one and frankly hes better than anyone in the US. The only possible exception being D1B......hes pretty good...just ask him.

Where did I say 2010 was about the debt?

2010 was about dissatisfaction with Obama, donks and healthcare/spending. 2012 will be about the deficit. You guys swung and missed in 2010, thinking the public was thrilled with stimulus packages, obamacare, etc., etc., that put the country trilliosn of dollars in hock. If you DON'T think 2012 will be about the deficit, prepare for a 1-term Obama (see my sig) and a conk-controlled SENATE as well. 8-) 8-) 8-)

The 2012 election will turn on the economy and what state it is in then, just as virtually every election has for the last 50+years with the guys in power getting the credit/blame.

I would have been thrilled if the stimulus was spent in a FDR way in actually building infrastructure that either eliminated bottlenecks (i.e. highway projects), increased effecency (ala TVA, airports, etc.) or created demand (parks, stadiums, etc) in out going years and had a lasting effect or in research (ala TVA) into new and marketable technologies, such as pollution control or better use of or creation of energy sources, rather than pouring it down a rat hole as was done...

No, what I'm suggesting is that Congress does have the power of the purse. Presidents are often given blame or credit for fiscal matters where none is due. Reagan, Bush I and Clinton all had to deal with the political reality of a Congress in opposition.

+2. If the money that went to handouts went towards infrastructure instead, it would have actually put people to work and put money in their pockets. If dems would have done this, they probably would not have gotten so embarrassed in '10.
